A North Carolina teachers' union is calling for the implementation of universal health care and welfare benefits for illegal immigrants in order to reopen schools in the fall.
Just days after the Durham Association of Educators (DAE) issued a statement railing against the school district's reopening plan, Durham Public Schools voted unanimously to hold all classes virtually for at least the first nine weeks of the school year. Included in the DAE statement was a call to adopt a variety of far-left policy goals before holding in-person classes, including Medicare for All and "direct income support regardless of immigration status."
"There are concrete policies that have permitted other countries to flatten the curve and return to public life: moratoriums on rent and mortgage, universal health care, direct income support regardless of immigration status," the statement reads. "We must fight together, collectively, for changes that will permit our communities to thrive during this pandemic and beyond."
The union's statement also calls for a full shutdown of the state, saying "until that is done, remote learning should remain the default."
The district did not respond to a request for comment...

Defund public unions.
More proof that teachers unions are self interested political and financial organizations that arent really concerned about education
So its NOT about a virus. Who woulda thunk.
They are going to need bulletproof vests. Without any police officers on campus.
Way outside their job description.
Fire their butts like PATCO.
Teachers should get back to just the R’s and forget everything else. And get rid of the divisive and destructive labor unions.
An excellent argument for vouchers. End the education unions.
No.
Let the unions pay for it.
Exactly. Shamelessly using COVID, as they have all along, to leverage their Marxist political agenda. It’s in the open now. Frauds. Countdown until Fauci joins them.
>>Teachers should get back to just the Rs and forget everything else. <<
They have not been about the R’s for 30 years, except for maybe Racism (only whites).
Most teachers today could not pass a 5th grade grammar exam.
The only good thing that could come out of this would be to break the back of government hate-filled indoctrination camps, i.e., schools.
It’s time to kick ALL Teacher’s Unions OUT of our schools.
Fire them all and let them starve.
My daughter- in- law a Harvard educated lawyer and liberal has had it with the teacher’s union and the teachers. She now sees that they’re in it for themselves and not the kids. My grandsons are in a “terrific” school system but their remote learning was close to zero. She did the bulk of the teaching and found out that only 50% of what was dumped on the kids was required.
Stop paying them for not working and see what happens.

Well said. I was a member of a teachers union for almost 30 years. Permit me to make a couple of points.
1. Leave it to the union leadership to make idiotic demands. For some reason, those big-mouths always see themselves as champions of social justice. As you noted, thats way outside their job description. You dont see that sort of thing with, say, the Teamsters.
2. In my experience anyway, the leadership rarely is representative of the membership. But the rules to elect those folks are so restrictive they would make Stalin blush. For example, I was NEVER allowed to vote for my state or national leadership. That was always done by delegates. And my local leadership never lost an election, not even once. Those elections were fixed.
A group of us once went to see a lawyer about that. We were told wed be wasting our money fighting it.
3. I am, in general, pro-union. Ive seen how badly non-union substitute teachers were treated. But any teacher who doesnt report to work as ordered should be immediately fired. That would take some courage on the part of the school board. Unfortunately, big-city school boards rarely have that courage.
Tell them to F off just before firing every damn one!
