Yesterday in 1950 North Korean Dictator Kim Il Sung egged on by Stalin attacked South Korea. My father is from South Korea and lived through the war. He immigrated to the US in 1964 to complete his medical training as a Radiologist in NYC. He stayed, got married and I was born an American. If it was not for the sacrifice of American, British, Canadians, Australians, Turks, Greeks and many other nations I would not be here. My father would have been stuck in a hell straight out of "1984". Thank you to all the veterans and families who had a member pay the ultimate sacrifice. These sacrifices were not in vain. South Korea is a prosperous democracy. North Korea is a dystopian nightmare. On the more humorous side, my father claims I am part of the same Kim clan that rules North Korea with an iron fist and a boot on the throat.
FYI, I meet a Korean war vet and he told me the South Korean government will cover the costs of a trip to South Korea. He took advantage of the offer.
My uncle fought in that war. He got a dear John letter while he was there. He said he fought with reckless abandon after that for a little while. Miracle he made it home.
My dad is perhaps the last casualty of the Korean War. He was in a plane crash there and the pilot broke his back because of the shoulder seat beat. As a result my dad never wore that belt again. Dad was in another plane crash in 1980 and if he had been wearing that belt it would have saved him.
My uncle, RIP. He was tapped by Intelligence because he had already fluently taught himself some 5 languages at that point.
I passed away far too soon in 1994 at only 61. Most likely due to chemicals he was exposed to during the war.
His loss was beyond devastating.
Thank You so much for this post C19fan.
Thank them while you can. There are approximately 2.25 million veterans from that war still alive today. Sounds like kind of a lot, but they’re getting up there.
