I just realized that Rod Stewart was singing about playing pool - not frying food

Posted on 06/23/2020 7:32:44 PM PDT by SamAdams76

For years and years since about 1971, I've been listening to "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart. Well, not every minute of these past 49 years but at least 500 times I've heard that song either on the radio or from my music collection.

Not even my favorite Rod Stewart song but I've heard it probably the most out of the Rod Stewart songs on account of it being so popular and all. ("In A Broken Dream" is my favorite Rod Stewart song and he recorded it with a band that called themselves Python Lee Jackson).

So anyway, I've heard the song a bunch of times. And there is a verse in that song that I always heard like this:

I suppose I could collect my books and get on back to school
Or steal my daddy's cue and make a living out of frying food
Or find myself a rock and roll band that needs a helpin' hand

At least, that's the way I always heard it. But thanks to the Internet, I happened to look at the lyrics tonight and saw that the lyrics referred to "playing pool" and not "frying food"

Then I go to listen to the song again and I still hear "frying food" instead of "playing pool."

You should give it a listen for yourselves. I'm sticking with frying food - I don't care what the lyrics say. I think they call that a mondegreen.

Besides, Rod Stewart looks a little like Gordon Ramsay. I think they call that a doppelganger. So I say frying food - not playing pool.

Manfred Mann. That’s all I need to say, I’m sure.

I forgot about “Stay With Me.”

I always liked that one... that is, until the part where he starts singing.

Most of the English rockers were very big on brass sections back then. The horns added greatly to the entire experience.

No need to read beyond the title. You are serious, correct? I do not believe you, nor do I have any faith in this fuzzy haired clown. ‘Nuff said.

The chorus of a Rick Derringer song goes “Lordy mama, light my fuse.” For years I thought it was “Lordy mama, bite my shoe.”

One of my sisters thought the line in Daydream Believer - white knight on his steed was white night honesty.

Well even though I know the line is Revved up like a deuce I still hear douche. Does not matter who is singing Blinded by the Light.

Been watching a lot of Duran Duran / Arcadia videos. Had to look up a lot of lyrics. Still good songs. Just have to remember that Simon writes poetry and they often end up as songs so might take a while to figure out the meaning, if ever. lol

Found a lot of their songs I never heard before either because the radio stations didn’t play them or because I also stopped listening to most new music sometime in the 90’s and kept the oldies station on. For a few years now the oldies includes my 80’s music.

I saw a youtube video of Bad Moon Rising where John Fogerty sang “there’s a bathroom on the right” as one of the lyrics.

When I was a kid, I thought the line, “la to da” in Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” was “lucky duck”. I can still hear my mom laughing the first time she heard me sing it that way.

G. Harrison had his Sitar, but Ron Wood had his Mandolin.

Del Shannon had his musitron, a one of a kind proto-synthesizer invented by his keyboardist/co-writer Max Crook.

Heh, I have seen that a few times!

I had a good friend some years back, a musician and collectibles store owner (He looked a lot like Rick O’Casik of The Cars) who used to intentionally mangle lyrics to the roaring laughter of the rest of us...

“Open Arms” by Journey became Broken Arms”

So now I come to you with broken arms
Nothing to hide, believe what I say
So here I am, with broken arms
Hoping you’ll see what your love means to me
Broken arms

Musitron. I never heard of that one. There were likely many formations of synthesizers back then, with only a few coming into widespread use. The Mellotron would be another.
