Anyone Watching Downton Abbey?

Posted on 06/14/2020 8:20:51 AM PDT by DIRTYSECRET

PBS pledge break time. Showing the series. Retirement/coronavirus is doing it to me. It seems America is fascinated with the Brits and their 'proper' behavior among the uppers. Go back 100 years, throw in TODAY's social discrepancies and you've got quite a formula. The castle backdrop and fashion will get the ladies hooked. I'm watching but not getting caught up in it.

I fast-forward through those parts, or make a sandwich.

I decided I wouldn’t reward them for putting fagdom where it clearly didn’t need to be.

I thought I’d really like “World on Fire”. They should the almost casual brutality of the Nazis and for that matter the Soviets in Poland. But they just had to add the gay characters...

Which is why I prefer to watch Polish TV Series now. They don’t do that crap.

The Polish series “Time of Honor” is much much better. There are some sites that stream it with English subtitles.

Downton Abbey (on TV) was easy watching, because it avoided liberal dreck and political statements. Few or no manufactured bad guys. Then the movie comes along with the gay guy outed. Stood out like a bright red pimple on the nose. Ruined the good record.

Dr. Thorne is some easy viewing, if one is into shows about proper English behavior.

Interesting. It was on a few weeks ago here in Louisiana, not today.
It your turn!! :)
Boredom made me watch; I had never seen an episode. The production-wardrobe, historical accuracy etc was fantastic. And some of the story lines were good.
Overall the most boring people(family) I’ve seen anywhere ever. Just absolute bores...who can’t even dress or feed themselves.
I do not understand the American obsession with that.

I watch Downton with the sound off, and listen to an episode of Deadwood.
There's nothing quite like a conversation between Al Swearingen and Mr. Wu.

We have been watching one episode per night for the entire lockdown period. We are on the last episode of series 6 tonight then we will watch the Downton Abbey movie. We also watched the mini series Belgravia, a prequel to Downton Abbey. That's what got us interested in watching DA in the first place. It's been very enjoyable, totally different from our other binge watch Money Heist

1 war, need more, like the Middle Ages when they were seasonal like sports are now.

Anyway wars kill serfs at a much higher rate then nobles.

Then you do away with dueling & no jousting & you end up with a surplus of upper class twits!

I think recreational drug use is finally get the numbers back under control. Example current Duke of Marlborough

DA is the best primetime soap opera ever. My mom would have loved it.

One of the dumbest storylines near the end of the show was how proud the whole family was to help the Prince of Wales thwart a blackmailer who had proof of the prince’s affair with a married woman. An honor right up there with fighting for England during the Battle of Britain.

The storyline with presumably virginal, unmarried Lady Rose and the black jazz singer was also ridiculous. A girl like Rose would not have risked her reputation with any man.

Hi - we did not care much or the DA movie. Not enough time to really tell any kind of story.

Try this for a change of pace. Royalty is not always so nice.
