On this date in 1692, the pious folk of Salem, Mass., hanged their first witch. Local bawd Bridget Bishop, pushing 60 and onto her third husband, was a natural target for the emergent civic insanity.
She liked living it up down at the tavern with a red bodice and the occasional game of shuffleboard. When she entered the courtroom, all the little brats with the sorcery stories (strangers to the accused before all this started) fell down and howled. When the Salem goodwives were tasked with groping her for bodily disfigurements that might be a witches mark, they...

Are Covid witches next?
One of my direst ancestors was hanged in Salem as a witch ...
Well they didn’t get them all. There were some out in front of Reno city hall on Saturday with pointy hats on holding signs ‘WITCHES AGAINST WHITE SUPREMACY!” Uh, hello. Couldn’t they cast a spell and end all this crap. NOT effective witches I guess.
What did she supposedly do?
In the courtroom, the young teens accused her of witchcraft ‘stuff’ (pinching them, choking, biting).
One guy from the town said that in conversations...she ‘seemed’ witchy.
Several women in the courtroom took to the task of examining her without clothing, and announced that she had a third nipple. This perked up the guys, and they assigned a second group to examine her....finding no extra nipples.
In the end...the chief charge that stuck was a fair amount of lying had occurred, in the mind of the judge. That was enough for the death sentence.
Were they hanged before or after the King forbade the hangings of Quakers?
Can we bring back witch hangings? Plenty of candidates out there.
Witch burning is no different then social justice
Im descended from a sister of one of the last people accused (John Alden Jr.).
Witches were hung or pressed to death.
I live across the river from Salem which
makes big buck$ off the witch histories.
Traffic horrible in Oct. I did see a
good play (actually put on in my own
city, Beverly) about a judge of accused
witches in puritan times. (Spoiler: at
end a bunch of nooses dropped from
above, implying “we are all guilty...”).
Monty Python and the Holy Grail..
She's a witch!
She turned me into a newt....
Lol
"Confess that you are a RACIST! We have witnesses against you! You will CONFESS! "
I am seeing it as very much the same. Right now we have the entire media engaging in mass hysteria to find the "witches (racists) among us.
They take anything to represent "evidence" of racism.
Yes, the conformist Puritan types are doing it again.
"(those) old enough to know better let young people think that they had the right to choose the laws they would obey as long as they were doing it in the name of social protest" -Reagan
Social protest was later changed to social justice with Jim Jones. Concept was the same. I think Reagan was talking about the zoot suit riots my father lived in East LA at that time. Said the zoot suit gangs wouldn't allow anyone to walk the streets.
