Customers are upset after finding out a popular restaurant in West Michigan has been adding “COVID Surcharge” to their bill in the middle of a pandemic, when customers are already strapped for cash because they’re on lockdown – and not everyone can work from home.

The place is called Goog’s Pub & Grub and they claim the “COVID Surcharge” is a transparent way to be up front about rising costs in the restaurant industry that may have occurred during the pandemic. But not every customer is happy as the owner tries to remain open.

The owner, Brad White, said in a report by Fox 17, “We’re just trying to pay the bills so we can stay open until this is over.

I have no problem with this unless he springs it on the customers after they’ve already eaten and had no way of knowing about it. Don’t like it? Go somewhere else.

Why be so obvious? Why not just raise the prices a bit to cover increased overhead?

I have been tipping much bigger values when we have been ordering out. It is just the right thing to do.

"Did they notify customers in advance of the surcharge, so they could “take their leave”?"

Really!

Just say, our costs have gone up so we're having to raise our prices. There, no surprise.

Stupid public! These businesses have been closed, but still had to pay their bills. They have to limit the number of people they can allow in and perform all of the safe sanitation for the clients. If you can’t pay a surcharge, DON’T GO! They are struggling to stay open. Don’t complain there’s no place to go when you get out. Lame brains.

It’s astonishing that people are surprised by this. I’m fine with it. It’s either stay in business or we lose choices of restaurants. Just raising prices means you also have to reprint menus, then reprint again when things get back to normal. And yes, competition will drive prices back down as possible. So a surcharge is the obvious option - but you should have a sign upon entering, don’t let it be a surprise.

I was expecting it. Maybe these people should just eat at home for the time being, its cheaper. Eating out right now should be more expensive, and I’ll tip more too. For the lucky ones like me that have continued to get paid and work from home, I’ve saved a load from cooking at home. When I can start dining out again I was going to spend a little more anyway. Those that can do this should, it’s the way to get this economy back on track.

If you’re not letting them know until you give them the bill that’s dishonest. If it’s open from the start not a problem.

I was in an Ocean State Job Lots store in MA today. The place was absolutely packed, no one 6 feet apart and angry customers. They imposed a 2% fee on to the bill which they said was to compensate their employees. It was posted all over the store.
The natives were restless and the guy behind me told everyone that they could thank China for what’s going on. A nurse behind him said nearly every patient that has died in her hospital was listed as Covid death even if they had terminal cancer. People are reaching the breaking point. When this store is the highlight of the day it’s pretty sad.
Unfortunately, I predict that Charlie Baker will move the goal post further on Monday.

Max,

You do realize that every menu across the land would have to be updated, printed, mailed, and put into place in order to do that, do you not ?

And then, when the buck surcharge is no longer needed ?

What, you want them to go back to the previous menus ?

Give it a think, please

There is a dentist in the Richmond area who just yesterday attempted to add a $10.00 Covid surcharge. They have regained their senses and have backed down.

I have zero patience for misbehavior due to ignorance. Zero patience!

So, pay attention. This is what results from Big Government running our lives. If you think all of this is a result of Covid, and the heavy hand is a result, you need to get a clue. Welcome to 1984.

“COVID Surcharge”

NBD, weeks later when the competition announces they have no “COVID Surcharge” at their restaurant and this fool freaks out.

****

My big brother owns a chain of restaurants. You do realize that changing menus is a way of life? The same way dishwashers, prep cooks sous chefs quit and change jobs.

And do you realize that menu CHANGES. Menu prices CHANGES. You actually think printing a new menu will cost a fortune? LOL This is not IN N Outwith the same menu for the past 50 years..

Give it a think, puh-lease. And yeah, I’ve worked in the bar and restaurant business since i was 15. ;)

I read somewhere a few days ago of restaurants making xeroxed copies of menus to be handed out and disposed of after each customer has used them.

Reduces cost and keeps sanitary.

They tried this sh*t with Obamacare tax. The one’s who suffer are the waiters. If I see this BS,I take it out of the tip or I don’t go to places that have this asinine tax.
