Scott Adams: Is every risk factor for #COVID19 a Vitamin D deficiency in disguise?

Scott Adams: just brought up this really great point at Twitter. This is what he said:

Is every risk factor for #COVID19 a Vitamin D deficiency in disguise? Google it: old, overweight, black, diabetic, smog dwellers, nursing homes, prisons, shaded NYC streets, Chinese urban dwellers, covered body parts (Iran). All would have vitamin D issues.

Maybe we only think the heat and sunlight and humidity are what makes most viruses fade in summer. I believe science is not entirely sure why summer helps. All four variables seem promising, including Vitamin D. But the latter explains more observations.

Does the Vitamin D correlation work In reverse too? Who is doing unexpectedly well at keeping COVID19 at bay? Texas, Florida, other outdoorsy states. How about kids. Do your kids wear sunscreen every time they go in the backyard or street? Probably not.

Prisons are showing high infection rates but low deaths. Just learned that prison meals are engineered with vitamin D supplements. Makes sense.

I think each and every one of those points is excellent.

I'm overweight, and have other issues. My doctor has me take several blood panels once every three months. One of the constant findings is that I'm low on Vitamin D, to the point that the doctor keeps increasing my supplement level. He's also increased my iron supplements as well.

Zinc is also an issue, although not as bad. Zinc supplements should be delivered by Amazon in a week, so that I can build up a store of the mineral.

What is the other supplement I need to get? Manganese?

Amazon is not the best place to get supplements. Lots of marketplace sellers, reviews of expired/foul smelling supplements, etc.

Places like Puritan’s Pride or Vitacost...who’ve been selling quality supplements for years, are usually a better choice to order from.

YMMV, tho.

I take a 50,000 unit of Vitamin D once a month due to my thyroid problem. Years ago I took it once a week.

Vitamin D stimulates the immune system to fight the infection. On the other hand, it inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines that cause the so-called cytokine storm. Here’s an article about vitamin D and the immune system.

There have been several studies which show that most patients with serious COVID-19 are vitamin D deficient or insufficient: a Louisiana study, a University of Southeastern Philippines study, and an Indonesian study.

I firmly believe that we must urge everyone (and especially those who belong to a vulnerable group) to optimalize their level of vitamin D. The optimal level of vitamin D is 40-60 ng/mL or 100-150 nmol/L. Then, the death rate of COVID-19 will decrease substantially, and people won’t be afraid any more.

Obesity is not caused lack of by Vit D.

Vitamin D gets tapped in body fat and cannot be metabolised. If you lose weight as the fat is burned Vitamin D is released and levels go up in the blood. Basically fat people are high risk of being deficient in Vitamin D. That's what Adams is referring to.

Can Vit. D deficiency be caused by wearing sunscreen while outdoors? A generation ago, prior to widespread sunscreen use, one didn’t hear about Vit D deficiency.

You just beat me to that exact question. Does use of sunscreen block Vitamin D from being absorbed into the body?

I don’t rely for Hollywood stars for my political insights, so I won’t rely on a cartoonist for my nutrition updates.

Been wondering since noticing my friends who are dx with Vit D deficiency are also the ones who apply sunscreen to every exposed body part or live back East where they stay indoors more than Westerners.

If you saw that Harvard Health article I mentioned, it’s actually more like higher than 37° North latitude between the autumnal and vernal equinox. And 37° N. bisects much of the continental USA.

I take Vit D every week. I have a prescription for it. Cost less for the prescription than OTC pills.

Mentioned earlier that one mom in new jersey (mine), 86, been living in one or another long term care facility for 5 years with Alzheimer’s disease, now advanced, no other significant health problems, tested COVID-19 positive during a facility-wide screening effort near the end of April. She was observed to be completely asymptomatic at the time and still is. She’s been religiously supplementing with vitamin D the whole time while under long term care. Did Vitamin D protect her? You make the call.

we have treated them with the vitamin D hammer...

Any physician who uses the word "hammer" in any description of a viral treatment has lost the attention of all other clinicians in the room.

So many quacks and weirdos have come out of left field during this plandemic. Do yourself a favor - eliminate that word from your vocabulary.

The darker a person’s skin, the more sun exposure they need to produce vitamin D. Hence black folks greater susceptibility to the virus and other diseases. Skin meant for the African sun.
