JMHO, but if you make the mask material so thick and impervious that air won’t flow relatively easily through it, the aspirations of the wearer will merely move the air AROUND the mask, through any available opening at the nose, etc., and there will be no filtering taking place at all. And then, as Archie Bunker would say, “What’s the pernt?”
Well, women don’t seem to wear stockings for anything any more, so they may as well be used for SOMEthing.

In olden days, a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking. But now, Heaven knows, anything goes.

oh an i keep hearing and seeing articles saying ‘masks are to prevent people from transmitting the virus- but not for protecting against getting the virus’- if that is true- why does the mask prevent particles from going out, but it can’t prevent them from coming in? and m ost articles that say it doesn’t prevent catching the virus- go on to claim people are putting doctors and nurses at risk by hoarding the masks- but wait- i thought masks didn’t prevent people from getting it? If so, why do docs and nurses need them to be protected?

coffee filters also rate pretty high in filtering out small .3 micron particles (Covid is thought to be around 0.06 micron to 1.4 or so- when on droplets, it’s over .3 microns)
But i guess they can be hard to breath through- nylon would likely be more breathable-
