BASEBALL: SUBWAY SERIES; In 5 Games, a Third Straight World Series Trophy for Yankees (2000)

The Yankees maintained their pre-eminence in New York last night, finishing off the Mets in the Subway Series by rallying in the ninth inning of Game 5, and established their place among the greatest baseball dynasties by winning their third consecutive title.

Luis Sojo slapped a rolling single off the Mets' starting pitcher, Al Leiter, with two outs in the top of the ninth to score Jorge Posada with the tie-breaking run, and when the throw home bounced off Posada and rolled into the Mets' dugout, Scott Brosius also scored. The Yankees won, 4-2, at Shea Stadium, finishing off a breathless World Series in which three games were decided by one run, two others by two runs.

When Mike Piazza flied out to deep center field to end the game -- coming within 15 feet or so of hitting a game-tying home run -- center fielder Bernie Williams dropped to a knee in prayer, then jumped and hugged left fielder Clay Bellinger, as teammates rushed from the Yankees' dugout to swarm the infield, to join the closer Mariano Rivera, and Derek Jeter, the World Series most valuable player, and the rest.

Some players lifted Manager Joe Torre onto their shoulders and carried him off the field; the principal owner, George Steinbrenner, watching the final out in the clubhouse, burst into tears. ''The Mets gave us everything we could want,'' he said, ''and it was great for New York.''

I thought they were playing in the subway since they have to keep social distance...

Subway Series is nickname for the Yankees-Mets crosstown rivalry.

Yes, because theoretically one could take the subway from Yankee stadium to Citi field.

The Yankees also won the World Series in 1996. So they won four in a five year period, which may be a streak of dominance exceeded only by the 1949 to 1953 Yankees winning 5 World Series in a row.

The Yank’s 4 year (1936-’39) series winning streak was a heck of a dominating championship run also.

I know. Just like the “Freeway series” for Angels-Dodgers.

I wanted Piazza to get a ring. I always liked him even though he killed our Phillies and we hate the Mets more than the Yankees.

God,I miss Baseball!

The bookmakers were giving thousands to one at the beginning of the season on this one.

$10 bucks thrown at it for laughs would have been 20k

wow

i remember the Tyson Douglas fight. Close to 50 to 1.

The biggest thing I ever won was 5,000 bucks on a 5 dollar scratch off.

I got 9 words out of 10 showing on a word game.

The 10th word would have been a million bucks.

I searched for that 10th word for hours!!

:)

And YES, I probably spent between 6k and 8k before I pretty much stopped all kinds of gambling.

And probably 100k in AC
