Yankees Sweep Out Braves in Game 4 to win 25th World title of the Century (1999)

NEW YORK, Oct. 27—The New York Yankees finished another season in the only place they feel comfortable. They finished on top of the baseball world, celebrating a 25th championship in a heap of bodies on the pitcher's mound of the game's most hallowed patch of earth.

In a season when they faced relentless pressure, were forced to deal with unexpected slumps and personal tragedy, these Yankees, like the Yankees of Ruth and Mantle before them, answered every challenge. They did so again tonight by completing a methodical four-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves with a 4-1 victory in Game 4 of the 1999 World Series.

"This club was very, very special," said Manager Joe Torre, his eyes welling with tears. "It's just sensational to be able to accomplish what we accomplished. This ballclub is close. They respected one another."

In a sense, yes.

It is good to reminisce.

Wow, they won their 25th championship of the 20th century in 1999. So one franchise won 25% of all World Series in that century.

I don’t know offhand which franchise is 2nd in the number of championships in the 20th century, or of all time. But I’m sure whoever is 2nd has won just a fraction of the Yankees.

The Yanks also won the World Series in 2000 and 2009, giving them 27 all time, since the World Series as we know it began in 1903.

... It is good to reminisce.

Understand, my dad and I were at the game when Hank Aaron hit his 715 HR, last game that dad an I went to together... April 8, 1974, a crowd of 53,775 people showed up for the game—a Braves attendance record.

The crowd erupted, I can still remember it...

Yes, the Yankees have the most championships, 27, an all-time record.

I believe the St. Louis Cardinals and maybe the Oakland Athletics.

Without looking it up I would guess St. Louis Cardinals

and with looking it up, they are tied with the Athletics (in various cities) in the 20th century though they have the second most all time on their own.

Yeah, Cardinals at 11, Red Sox and Athletics tied for third with 9.

Everybody beats the Braves. This is the second Yankee beats Braves thread in 24 hours.

How about we do Diamondbacks beat Yankees in 2001, or Red Sox beat Yankees in 2004?

The Braves are really lucky that they won that 1995 World Series, or else, they would have looked like real underachievers.

In alphabetic order, they had Roger Clemens, David Cone, Orlando Hernández, Derek Jeter, Tino Martinez, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, Daryl Strawberry and Bernie Williams on their roster. Yes, they had George Steinbrenner buying the best team and because they were the New York Yankees they had the money for it!

As a fan and resident of Tampa Bay, we have a love-hate of the Steinbrenners and the Tampa Spring League Yankees. The richest and the poorest teams in pro baseball, both in the AL East!
