(Gallup Poll) In U.S., More Fear COVID-19 Illness Than Financial Harm

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As the country endures an unprecedented shutdown of public life to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, more Americans are worried about contracting the illness (57%) than about experiencing severe financial problems from the disruption caused by it (48%).

While most of those who are worried about each of these possibilities say they are only "somewhat worried," slightly more are "very worried" about encountering financial hardship (17%) than getting the virus (12%).

Bottom Line - Since the implementation of mass social distancing last month, which has routed the U.S. economy, most Americans have perceived that the country is in a recession or even depression, but thus far it's the minority who have reported that their own personal finances have suffered (emphasis mine).

Survey Method: Results for this Gallup poll are based on self-administered web surveys conducted April 10-12, 2020, with a random sample of 2,448 U.S. adults, aged 18 and older, who are members of the Gallup Panel. Gallup uses probability-based, random sampling methods to recruit its Panel members.

Of course, it is "minority" so far that suffered personal financial hardship. Only 22 million Americans" (and their families) filed for unemployment since the start of the pandemic. Geesh!

Very misleading poll. I - and millions of Americans - are retired and on a relatively safe income of social security and some form of retirement plan, which are not threatened in the short term. Therefore, I am currently more worried about the CV than I am about money.

Then there are millions of Americans who work for government at some level, or in an industry not affected by the shutdowns, or who are able to work from home. They have little to fear in the short-term about money problems, but will have some concern about the CV.

But for millions of Americans, this is absolutely devastating from an economic point of view, and this poll attempts to generate a callous attitude towards those people.

My anecdotal experience is the same. I have many liberal friends and acquaintances, and not a single one is eager to go back to work. The only people I hear are agitating and anxious to go back are my right winger and Christian friends.
