My wife has been making cotton masks based on Joanne's online instructions. Giving them to family and friends in So Cal but with the additions of embroidery of "Long Beach Strong". I'm still working a USAF project here in FL so I asked her to make some with our Squadron # plus "Strong" and she has made a good number already. Big hit and puts smiles on peoples faces. I certainly married up!
Great that is wonderful.
My wife is also making masks. She has made many with a couple of different designs. We have sent them to hospitals, Hospice facilities and coworkers.
Does she have a source for elastic or is she using the tie design? We have been calling around for 1/8 or 1/4 elastic.

I think that is really great and you and your family are great Americans for trying to do something good.
That said, I think it is worth looking at the NIH study on cloth masks. 97% of the particles come through them.
I am not sure they actually do anything for you.

I ran out of all my narrow elastic two weeks ago, so I still had about forty yards of 1” wide no-roll, and easily cut it into five narrow strips—— there’s lines on the no roll elastic that are fairly easy to follow.
you need to put a couple layers of non-woven interfacing type material in the middle between the cotton layers.

How about Velcro ? Or maybe the Cloth Bungee Cords ? Cut the ends off and pull the center strands out of the outside cover. Most of the ones I’ve seen when they get old and start coming apart have strands inside. Just a couple of Brain Farts.
