Here's the rundown:
My mother does evaluations for Solutions for Care, helping determine how much assistance elderly and disabled people receive from state programs available in Illinois. This includes home health care workers, cleaning services, food deliveries, and transportation for medical appointments.
Right now, one of her clients is not receiving the amount of food necessary, and it will be at least a month before they will receive any bump in benefits. An elderly woman is caring for her husband, who has dementia and who is physically disabled, and neither can stand for long periods of time in a grocer or food pantry, not to mention the stay-at-home order here in IL.
I called four food banks in the area and received no response, full voicemail boxes, or the facilities are closed due to COVID. The one who answered doesn't serve the area in which the couple lives, which is Cicero.
They don't have much money, and are sharing home delivered meals meant for one person. Does anyone have an idea who to contact for assistance? I would spend my own money to shop and deliver to stock their pantry, but I'm immune compromised and not supposed to be going out and interacting with people.
Any information is greatly appreciated. I can provide my contact info or my mother's if requested.
Pastor of a local church should be able to handle this....
Contact a local church?
Salvation Army. But you’ll have to be prepared to prove
the need, since they get called upon by everyone.
So, I got the client info wrong; I crossed info from two clients on accident. Oops.
He does live in Cicero, with less than $20 in the bank. He is alone; completely. His brother is in CO, and caught COVID. His brother visited intermittently, and now cannot. He’s physically disabled.
Request still stands.
Yes. That was my second try, after contacting the bank outside of the area. I contacted the pantries in Cicero, and either couldn’t get anyone or they are closed until further notice.
Maybe call local social work agencies. Or local radio/tv stations - maybe one would be interested in doing a story on people who need help during this crisis and volunteers would step up. Is there a Meals On Wheels in the area? Our local one is still operating.
Have you had any luck with local churches?
He’s getting Meals on Wheels, but it’s currently supplementary. He’s not getting enough food right now.
I called CBS, and received a full mailbox with no answer. I also called Catholic Charities, and received no answer. CC also tends to make people jump through hoops, and we know it from personal experience.
Many grocery stores deliver for a fee. They may even waive the fee under certain circumstances.

Try Northern Illinois Food Bank.
630-443-6910.
Located in St. Charles IL.
Good luck.

What kind of food is needed???
If so, try DAV or VFW as well.
I contacted them as well; they don’t serve in his area. I got a hold of them first, actually, which is how I found out they don’t serve Cook County.
This guy has less than $20 to spend. That’s not enough for several weeks of groceries.
Quite literally everything. All food groups, preferably nonperishables.
I have to make my bi-weekly run to the store tomorrow morning, when the store opens and nobody is shopping. It looks like I’ll be picking up a spend-anywhere gift card and my mother will deliver it to him over the weekend. It’s a temporary fix, but better than nothing.
Even the church pantries didn’t answer. This vital supply line is taking a hit.
I think I might talk to someone at the pantry down the street and pay one of their volunteers to make a delivery. He’s not in our area, nowhere near, but they’re a church. I can’t imagine they’d say, “No”.
