Early Tuesday morning, President Trump continued to signal that it is his intention to re-open the U.S. economy and get Americans back to work sooner rather than later. Repeating yesterday’s theme that the government can’t afford to implement a draconian “cure” that is worse than the China Virus, the President issued the following tweet:

We can do two things together. THE CURE CANNOT BE WORSE (by far) THAN THE PROBLEM! Congress MUST ACT NOW. We will come back strong!

For an investment community hungering to see a bottom reached in the stock market indexes, this is a crucial moment in time. There is no way the markets can find their bottom when they have no certainty – or even any real idea – about when business might resume and start getting the economy fully back on-line.
Markets were already soaring today on the prospect of the Democrats caving in and allowing the Senate stimulus measure to move through the process. The President’s move to set a firm target date for beginning to get the economy moving again will only serve to support that positive sentiment among investors longing for some good news.
As usual, President Trump’s sense of timing yesterday and today was impeccable. Be glad he’s your President.

Easter is too soon unless we have an effective treatment (entirely possible with at least four treatments undergoing clinical trials, and I expect at least three to release preliminary results by then). Easter is too soon, but not by much, and setting that target date can put an end to the stock market panic. Easter is too soon, but President Trump can always change his mind if the facts do not justify those changes by Easter.
I'm okay with Trump's announcement, so long as he doesn't treat it as carved in stone.

Trump will be vilified by the left. Perhaps he should suggest that everyone, individuals and businesses, should make their own individual decisions on how they want to procede going forward.
He did not set a target date. He said he wanted it by April 12. He said “I’d love to...”
You know the media will change it to:
“Lockdown to end at Easter.” That’s not what he said.
However, the lockdown was ordered by governors and mayors. They make the rules for their areas. This will be overlooked by the media when it serves their major purpose: dumping Trump.

exactly, Mr. President. it should never have been an exclusive or. we don’t need to manage this particular epidemic in the “worst case” mode. we can walk and chew gum. it just needs good judgment and voluntary cooperation up the line from the individual to the gov’t. thank God you are there Mr. President.
setting a goal and target date is managing this just like a boss. Easter Sunday is a great choice to be up and flying!

What will happen is that President Trump will have data from the hydroxychloroquine clinical trial that starts today (Tuesday) in New York, and thus he will know whether it’s an effective treatment, meaning that the unknown fear of a “surge” that would overwhelm our medical system becomes known AND mooted, assuming hydroxychloroquine is in fact an effective treatment ...

The number of infections is rising exponentially. Every nation that did lockdowns has reversed the infection rate.
Soon, the US will have the most cases because of the slow response. We cannot let up now.
I am a little confused about this as much of this shutdown is controlled at the state level. And the states will do their own thing regardless of what the federal government does.
Correct. And the states that don’t stop the virus spreading will be decimated by it.
