Australia's "unofficial national anthem" Waltzing Matilda in Indonesian language.

Australia's unofficial national anthem, "Waltzing Matilda" is a song about suicide. How can that be?

Scroll down in this post for a glossary: https://tujuhbelasan.com/2020/03/22/sustainable-development-9-waltzing-matilda-in-indonesian/

It is worth noting that the Indonesian revolutionary war slogan "Merdeka atau Mati" (Free or Dead) can be made to work well rhythmically with the English "You'll never catch me alive" cred he. At least I think so.

Indonesia is an incredibly free country. The West cannot afford to ignore it as a balance to totalitarian China. Who agrees?

I have not ignored this huge republic.

How do you translate swagman, billibong, jumbuck and tucker bag into Indonesian? Heck, how do you translate them into English? :-)

We learned to sing ‘Waltzing Matilda’ in elementary school.

Nobody told us that it was about a suicide; we thought it was just about a guy sitting meditatively under a tree by a pond:

Not the first time that theme was used to inspire a very popular song.

One of Glenn Miller’s best known songs;
Moonlight Serenade, was originally named: “Now I Lay Me Down To Weep”.

The theme from the TV show Mash was called “Suicide Is Painless” was written by Johnny Mandel(melody) and Mike Altman (lyrics). Mike wrote the lyrics when he was 14 years old.

I remember the movie “On the Beach (1959)” used “Waltzing Matilda” as a theme. It’s probably not one I would recommend watching at this time.

I'm a huge Nevil Shute fan, but "On the Beach" is his one book I definitely do not like!

Try "A Town Like Alice" or "Trustee from the Toolroom" for really good stories.

As for another great unofficial Australian National Anthem, "I Am Australian"

Here are both together:

The Seekers - I Am Australian, Georgy Girl, Waltzing Matilda

These Indonesian muslims include every shade of opinion from those few who only have the religion on their identity cards because you have to name a religion there to those few who commit terrorist acts.

The overwhelming majority are devout muslims and tolerant to others. But this still allows the existence of million strong minority groups who can do things like toppling the former christian governor of Jakarta, Ahok, when he made Bidenesque comments (about Islam) which offend them.
