Escalating Quickly: Hoboken NJ Announces City-Wide Enforced Coronavirus Curfew – All Citizens Must Stay in Their Homes 10pm to 5am…

Telling people to remain calm and simultaneously forcing people to remain in their homes would seem to be a contradiction in messaging; potentially only worsening the panic. However, this is one of those, “well, yes it’s unconstitutional except when….” moments, that may have rather profound consequences.

The Democrat mayor of Hoboken New Jersey has announced a mandatory curfew between 10pm and 5am where all residents are not permitted to exit their residence; and all bars must close due to the coronavirus.

I don’t know if this is the first ‘mandatory’ coronavirus curfew, or even how such an effort could feasibly be enforced, but it’s likely not going to be the last:.

New Jersey – 10:45pm ET – Hoboken Mayor Ravinder Bhalla announced a citywide curfew will be in effect starting Monday. The curfew also places major restrictions on bars and restaurants.

The curfew will be in effect from 10 p.m.- 5 a.m.starting on Monday, and until further notice. Residents will be required to stay home, except for emergencies, or if needed at work by their employer.

As of 11 a.m. Sunday, bars that do not serve food will not be permitted to operate at all. All other bars and restaurants are no longer permitted to serve food within the establishment, and can only sell takeout or delivery. (read more)

There’s an old cemetery in central west Texas where some of my family rest. There are many graves dated 1918, but most of them are infants and toddler age.

I know someone who owns a small commercial building. Two business tenants already said they don’t know if they can make next month’s rent.

Yeah, you can sort of expect a black swan event to happen, maybe every apx 10 years or so is a fair guesstimate. I was mostly referring to the mortality rate though in comparing COVID19 to Spanish Flu. I think the mortality rate for the Wuhan Flu is high because there are probably 10x more undiagnosed cases than diagnosed cases. And if it is 10x that means instead of a 2% mortality it is 0.2 mortality, or 2x the rate of seasonal flu - and if that is true, then the panic and paranoia should come to an end.

The regulations have prevented any flexibility in the method for testing. The FDA literally has restricted it down to the type of equipment and the grade of reagents allowed to test, when in reality there is ample testing equipment of different types and reagents that are not “approved” for this use but will likely work perfectly well and at much bigger scale. Red tape having to do with insurance, with the people who write the regulations protecting their ego and their turf and so on. They really should have a rule that will relax the rules in cases like this, even if that means a slightly greater false positive/negative rate. But we’re shooting in the dark right now and that forces us to take drastic measures when the possibility exists that while we all need to take reasonable precautions, we should really just be trying to protect the most at-risk populations.

Exactly. So what’s the guy to do? He can evict the tenants, but fat chance he can find a replacement. He can give them some kind of break, maybe accept partial rent and amortize the difference over the next 12-24 months. But maybe the owner is leveraged too and needs relief from his bank/mortgage holder. It’s a tough spot for everyone.

So as far as the House Bill goes, I just see that the Democrats, as usual, have no freaking clue how the economy really works, they are just playing to their base with virtue signalling and in the end their bill will be of no practical use to anyone except kids who need free lunch and public sector and major corporation employees who can take 4 weeks off with pay on the backs of the taxpayers and shareholders. Everyone else is on their own.

McConnell needs to fatten that bill up with relief for everyone.

Some churches in Southern California will only be streaming their services now.

The W.H.O. declaring it a Pandemic set the wheels in motion.

Yeah well, WHO are the W.H.O? Again I am no expert, but a pandemic by definition is a disease that is ‘prevalent’ over the entire world. The W.H.O. may have its own definitions, and the disease may be present in many parts of the world, but it is as yet not really prevalent over the entire world. Outbreak vs Epidemic vs Pandemic. Maybe it’s semantics but I think it is more politics.

But I get your point, the POTUS does himself no favors arguing with the W.H.O. They got him in a quandary. Perhaps he sees it for what it is, and in fact the steps he has taken is at least in part his way of getting back at them or pushing him to the brink. OK, it is fair to take all precautions but if they want to screw with him, he can screw with them too. They are locked out for 30 days. He can lock them out for 90 days. We can outlast them.

Our saving grace is our relatively low population density.

Here is my fear. There are going to be a lot of idiots in Florida going to the beach, and this with their sizable elderly population, may make Florida our “Italy”, I hope I’m wrong, but it’s my biggest concern.

Possible. Sort of depends on the density at the beach and how much touching they do. At least they are outside.

Personally, and I am thousands of miles away, my biggest fear is New York City, and downstate New York in general. All those people on the subways and the LIRR and MetroNorth trains every day breathing the same stale air, touching each other at the stations, crammed into subway cars, touching the railings and grip handles and escalator/stairwell rails. Not to mention just the density of the city in general. I fear an epidemic there will become apparent in the next 7 days or so. They have plenty of elderly in New York (not all of them went to FL lol) and also plenty of at risk people e.g. diabetics, high blood pressure, smokers etc.

But maybe not. Maybe we’re lucky. Trump shut Asia flights down 6-7 weeks ago. So maybe he did act fast enough that we can get this under control. At the same time, if I were DeBlasio or Cuomo, instead of sending people out looking for price gouging and closing bars and restaurants and churches, I’d insist that all the train cars stop every hour and get hosed down with bleach spray. It would inconvenience people just a little bit, but it would slow the disease contagion a lot imo.

Most definitely, politics is part of the equation. But there is little doubt that any country that fails to take major action will see the disease reach epidemic level, and the WHO was watching as countries ignored their warnings. Look how far Italy is willing to go NOW, after losing containment. Their 1019 deaths over the past 7 days would be 5,600 in the US population and 23,000 in China. In a single week. Sure, NOW they're gonna shut down the country. I'm sure Italy wishes they had listened to the WHO in January.

10 pm to 5 am are great hours for a teenager’s curfew, but how does this help contain a virus? Nobody’s out and about then anyhow. Maybe it makes sense, but I’m not seeing it.

This is really aimed at keeping people out of Hoboken more than keeping residents of Hoboken indoors. The place is a hotspot for people from all over the area, and has a major commuter rail and ferry terminal as well.

Hoboken is a big young professional neighborhood that is almost an extension of NYC. Sort of the Murray Hill of the Jersey border. So lots of neighborhood evening bars and restaurants too.

Maybe a test run for Manhattan and Brooklyn?

France and Spain have followed Italy in pretty much shutting down such establishments totally. The US looking to do so presumably only in the “hot spots” where the virus is spreading most rapidly—and NYC would likely be the biggest of the hot spots.

A large concentration of immigrants from the Indian subcontinent in that area and especially in neighboring Jersey City. They are highly educated and productive and well behaved in general as a group.

My wife has the corned venison in the fridge. It has been sitting in its brine for over a week. To be served with cabbage I grew last summer and potatoes I grew stored in the root cellar. My organic farm/homestead is my “store”. Well, she did have to go out and get the Guinness, but what’s here is nothing like having it in Ireland.
