Why do you suppose Carter wasn’t re-elected if everybody thought he was such an unsurpassed example of roaring success? Also in that era, the mayor of Chicago lost his job for failing to handle the aftermath of a snowstorm. People get sacked when they don’t deliver, that’s just how life works and always has worked like that.

Unfortunately you are correct. Trump the optimist earns political dividends for a few days at most. Trump realism will do the opposite in the short run.
Right now Trump needs to stick to explaining what we are doing to slow down and stop the spread of this virus. But mostly he needs to stop saying anything about outcomes.
