As a Houston-area resident and military veteran, Im troubled by Pierce Bushs entry into the race for the 22nd Congressional District. I spent six years in the Air Force during the early 2000s and deployed to Iraq in service to our country. All the while, members of Pierces family lived in the White House and called the shots. He comfortably went to college, worked in private equity, and later began work at a nonprofit.
Pierce thinks his foray into politics should be comfortable too. He was shopping for a congressional district months ahead of his announcement. I heard rumors of his entry into the race from GOP insiders, which triggered the obvious reaction in my head, Who the hell is Pierce Bush?
He initially expressed interest in the 7th district, the one his grandfather, the late President George H.W. Bush, represented in the late sixties. He undoubtedly realized that he would be unable to beat the two strongest contenders for the seat, Cindy Siegel and Wesley Hunt, the latter of whom has received an endorsement by President Trump. The challenge was likely too intimidating. Pierce ditched that idea after GOP Rep. Pete Olson announced he was retiring in the 22nd District.
The 22nd is more convenient for Pierce; its the path of least resistance. Its been in Republican hands for six terms and President Trump won it by eight points in 2016. The young Bush does not live in the district but has planned to move in to it, according to the Texas Tribune.
Worse yet, Pierces strength in this race comes entirely from the name and connections he shares with two former presidents, one of whom served as a Texas congressman and the other as a Texas governor, as well as with the current Texas Land Commissioner. Pierces father Neil, the son of George H.W. Bush, has reportedly been actively working his contacts to support Pierce. His candidacy epitomizes callowness, nepotism, and self-entitlement. This family thinks they are royalty.
If that sounds harsh, consider who Pierce is asking voters to reject: One of his GOP primary rivals is a county sheriff, Troy Nehls, with decades of law-enforcement and U.S. Army service, not to mention two Bronze Star medals. Other candidates include a self-made tech-marketing maven with a strong record of voluntarism as well as a former Border Patrol agent, Greg Hill.
Two additional veterans who may tout their honorable service record are Joe Walz an army veteran and Jon Camarillo a marine.
Im still waiting for Pierce to reveal whats so special about him besides his lineage. I believe a major reason his run vexes me is my own years of service in the United States Air Force. I am certain many others with service records have a similar view. The problem isnt simply that Pierce hasnt served in a military capacity. Its that he hasnt served, period, in spite of the advantages into which he was born. He hasnt shown true appreciation for them. He was never a policeman, a firefighter, or any other kind of first responder.
Pierce moreover hasnt demonstrated unique professional merit. Since 2015, hes been the chief executive officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star, a laudable organization to be sure, but one youre not picked to head in your 20s without either social privilege or special aptitude. He has only the former.
It is clear Pierce is self-conscious about these matters. This is not about my family, he told the press last month.
He has yet to give us reason to believe him. That is why I ask, why didnt you serve and why I call especially on my fellow veterans to ask Pierce Bush the same. We need representatives in congress with a little skin in the game.

Stay out of the Bushes
STAY OUT DA BUSHES!!!
I could never vote for an American named, “Pierce.” The Euro-weeniest name ever.
The Bushes are like the Clintons like the Bidens, etc etc. Like hemmorrhoids. They are a pain in the a$$ and never go away.
“I could never vote for an American named, Pierce. The Euro-weeniest name ever.”
I bet he has a driver named Jeeves
If you vote for a Bush, you are voting to turn the USA into North Mexico. (Same for Flimsey Grahamnesty)
Bush Crime Family at work again.
I thought Neil was Dubya’s brother. Neil Bush was caught up in the Silverado S&L scandal back in the 80s which more or less knocked him out of politics. If Pierce is Neil’s son, that tells me he’s from a bad branch in the family tree.
But, regardless, I voted for my last Bush after their family tucked tail and voted for Hillary in 2016. That told me all I needed to know about this “Republican” royalty. If there are better men running for that seat, they should get your vote.
The biggest argument for not electing Pierce is that he is a bush.
The contention that you have to be a veteran, a cop or a fireman to be a good congressman is pure nonsense.
He has to be spending a TON of money.
Like the local Sheriff, who's also running for this seat said...."If you don't even know any of the local restaurants, around here, but you want to be Congressman....something's not right"...or, something to that effect.
(I guess he was asked about local spots, and had no clue.)
The good Sheriff is right!
The 22nd is a crowded Republican primary. Wall to Wall ads are pretty annoying especially if you aren’t in the 22nd but share media. Pierce can go sit in th corner for all I care.
After what Uncle George recently said about POTUS, this carpetbagger has a lot of nerve trying to hitch himself on to Trump’s MAGAWAGON.
As far as I’m concerned, the Bushes are so over.....I’d vote for Kathleen Wall if I could vote there but her voice grates on me but that aside, she’d make a good Congresswoman.....
I would never vote for another Bush for anything. Never, ever. Besides, I agree that Pierce Bush hasn’t done a damn thing that makes him worthy of being elected to Congress. But being a member of a first responder group or a member of the armed forces doesn’t cut it either. There are too many corrupt Marxocrat scumbags who were police, firefighters, FBI agents, former marines, ex-astronauts, and every other sort of government stooge to make being employed by the government an indicator of special character or good judgment in and of itself.
GHW Bush was so unimpressive, he couldn’t get elected dog catcher without manipulating the process. He passed those genetics down to his boyz.
I never heard of the guy, so I just googled him. The first result for Pierce Bush isn’t about him or his career, or campaign website, it’s actually his father’s Wikipedia entry. I think that’s about right.
He was named for Barbara Pierce Bush.
