CHARLESTON, S.C. - His message is uninspiring. His ground game is flawed. After Iowa and New Hampshire, they’re no longer convinced he can beat Donald Trump.
Interviews with two dozen South Carolina lawmakers, consultants and voters here suggests there are deep cracks in Joe Biden’s firewall state, where his campaign expects to turn his misfortunes around with a robust victory that highlights his broad-based support - particularly among African Americans.

But his advantage has gradually eroded. In a state where African Americans cast 61 percent of the primary vote in 2016, a February Quinnipiac poll showed Biden's support among African-Americans at 27 percent - a 22-point slip from before the Iowa caucus. While almost no one is willing to predict a Biden defeat here, many point to worrisome signs about the state of his campaign.
During a get-out-the-vote effort Wednesday in a North Charleston neighborhood just blocks away from Biden’s offices, members of the media rivaled the number of volunteers present. Some prominent black state leaders expected to be firmly in Biden’s camp have migrated to other campaigns, namely those of Tom Steyer and Bernie Sanders.
Dahli Myers, vice chair of the Richland County Council and a former Biden supporter, said she switched allegiances to Sanders after warning several Biden staffers that their grassroots approach was outdated. His get-out-the-vote strategy, she said, was too tailored to older voters and his message of electability too broad to be convincing.

Here’s a bit of irony.
Last week my wife and I drove up to Columbia to see the South Carolina capital. Part of our visit included walking through the old, civil war era historic district. As we’re walking along, guess what’s in the middle of this district? A Joe Biden campaign office!
I turned to my wife and said, “It figures old Joe Biden would set-up in the oldest part of town.” It didn’t look too busy.
A photo of Plugs groping a black girl the way he groped white and Asian ones would be the nail in the coffin.
Well, at least it would prove he isn’t a racist?
Plugs will say “Ah ain’t in no ways ‘tard” before a black audience in SC. Count on it.
The firewall (being a candidate) is protecting Joe from the investigation of his corruption. He will stick it out to the bitter end and hope the “Deep State” will protect him (and the rest of them).
The headline sounds more like a Buttigieg story.
That's a good point from our perspective.
But I'm pretty sure the author doesn't think of Joe as corrupt, so I don't think that's what he/she meant by "firewall." Perhaps the author is talking about the black vote.
Sadly, after decades of plantation indoctrination, you're 100% correct.
I'll be shocked if Trump gets 10-15% even after all his accomplishments.
