It all began when Ray Rice punched his wife on camera, the NFL obviously met with the networks and said “we want totally woke PSAs for all our commercials in this year’s super bowl, no beer ads with bikini girls or anything like that because we’re virtue signalling”. Commercials that year were awful, including the worst one, an insurance ad with a kid talking about all the great things he’ll miss because you killed him with your bad home maintenance skills. And Super Bowl ads never have recovered because once you let the woke / SJWs in they never ever leave. Now we get bland nothing ads that are designed to just make you say “oh snap! a celebrity doing something I didn’t expect! that’s crazeee!”
