In the fall of 2018, the trustees of Washington and Lee University voted to paper over parts of the universitys history.
On the recommendations of Washington and Lees Commission on Institutional History and Community, the board voted to close off the Recumbent Statue of Robert E. Lee in the university chapel that bears his name and to remove the name of John Robinson from an important campus building.
A group of alumni were concerned by those decisions and started to dig deeper. They discovered that those werent the only attempts to de-emphasize their schools history. Over the preceding year, the school ended prayer at public ceremonies, temporarily removed a stop in the interior of Lee Chapel from campus tours for prospective students, and even briefly banned a childrens book on Lees horse, Traveller.
From those concerns, The Generals Redoubt was born. The mission of this group of alumni, friends, parents, and students is the preservation of the history, values, and traditions of Washington and Lee University. The groups July 2019 newsletter explains that A redoubt is a military term designating a temporary defensive position from which offensive operations can be launched. We thought the term aptly described what our group was trying to do.
In particular, they want to make sure that the men who established and sustained the university are not erased from its history: George Washington, John Robinson, and Robert E. Lee.
The school now bears Washingtons name because he saved what was then Liberty Hall Academy by giving the school its first major endowment in 1796. In 1826, the school was once again struggling. It had only 65 students and little money. That year, trustee John Robinson died and left his estate to the school.

May as well change the name to Stalin and Mao University.
If one were unhappy with the appearance and history of the university....maybe one should have selected another university to attend.
“...May as well change the name to Stalin and Mao University....”
Yep. This is how communists take over a country...one little bite at a time until they’ve got the whole apple. Those that have proposed these changes need to be GONE. They don’t belong there.
Communists/Marxists destroy everything they touch.
Spineless University leadership. They’re Bolshiveks.
Good that they are defending history. Anyone attempting to erase it is a Marxist.
Why aren't those who voted for these things removed from the board?
A better idea is to revoke tenure for all SJWs and blackball all the socialist.
These days, universities are nothing but extremely over-priced, socialist indoctrination centers.
The new technological age is quickly accelerating the demise of universities. They’re pricing themselves out of existence, and of relevance.
Not before they suck down a lot more folks in the required textbook no one would otherwise ever read scam.
We can do better still.
Burn up all history books. Outlaw history studies. Change names of all cities, counties and states, since many/most of the names have a historical context. Ditto roads. Ditto government buildings.
Do not rename anything after today’s “safe” historical figures, as there is a great likelihood even those names (eg Barack Obama, Dr. Martin Luther King) will someday in the future be scorned by future SJWs.
Consult Calypso Louie for “safe” numbers, and just give everything a number.
Maybe then, we could all just work at being better neighbors and citizens.
I won’t be surprised when they dig up the bones of Traveler near the chapel and cart them off to some garbage dump. Isn’t Lee buried under the chapel? Might as well dig him up, too.
... rename to State Collective Upper Level School #24.
Lee is in the basement of the chapel.
They want to CLOSE IT OFF so no one can visit.
These bastards need to be strung up. Sick of them.
This isn’t about attendance.
It’s about EMPLOYEES.
They need to “work for” another liberal-commie university if they hate it so much.
FTM, all commies in this country need to move out to another nation since they hate it here so much. They’re insane staying here if it’s so awful.
It kind a reputation is a very good school, which is why it began to attract more and more and more students from northern states, which I should say Im very liberal states. As a graduate of the University of the South at Sewanee, I used to believe that there was a trifecta of three great, Southern, liberal arts schools: Sewanee, Davidson, and Washington & Lee. Sadly, all three have been compromised, all three less and less rooted in their southern heritage. Its all very sad.
