I received a speeding ticket tonight.

Posted on 01/18/2020 7:27:06 PM PST by ebshumidors

I received a speeding ticket tonight coming up hwy 7 from Ole Miss to Memphis. Since I haven’t had one in ten years or so, I found a few tings interesting:

1. The police were in the opposite lane and must have locked on without sitting on the side of the road with a radar gun. I imagine they have some new stuff that uses their speed against an oncoming car’s speed. Not hard to solve, but I’ve never run into it before. 2. Since it was at night, after I pulled over, I put on the overhead lights, rolled down the window and put my hands on the steering wheel. When the officer approached, he made sure to stay at my 8 o’clock. This is also new. 3. All he asked for was my license. No insurance and registration. I guess those are in the computer. 4.. There was no ticket book. It was a computer printout. 5. The officer was polite and all of my USNA parent and Ole Miss stickers didn’t help. I’m wondering if Marshall county offers a veteran’s discount.

I haven't had one since the late 1990s but I do keep working at it. They always seem to catch the other guy.

1996 for me. Glad I don't drive like that anymore! :-)

Speeding tickets are IMO voluntary taxes. Sooner or later you're gonna get caught and have to pay money to the state. I don't like doing that for any reason so not paying a speeding ticket seems like an avoidable "tax" to me.

Then you will not even have to beak any laws to be ticketed.

True that. Several years ago a had to make a 35 mile drive between work and home and I drove a sporty car. After the 3rd ticket, I bought a boxy Toyota and never got another ticket even though I drove the same route at the same speed.

Big deal - I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.

I love FR's "view replies" link so I can see others already got the Johnny Cash reference. Still your post made me smile. Well played.

Ya. Then he will give you a ticket for going 80 or 90.

Yes,I know that speed limits vary in different parts of the country. It's been a while since I've been there but I think I recall the speed limit on I-75 south of Tampa being 75MPH. In such an area I'd set my cruise control at about 70-72...and still be in the right lane.

I worked in an ER. I know what death looks like. That fact, combined with my desire to avoid contact with police makes me a rather conservative driver.

BTW...I see you're from Arizona...which reminds me of a story.

My best friend's Dad was an actual rocket scientist in the 50s and 60s (MIT grad and all).He worked for a defense contractor and,as a result, spent a lot of time in Nevada. He used to tell us stories about some of the highways out there having *no* speed limit.

I found that fascinating at the time but today...not so much.

For a long time I had a dream of renting a BMW in Germany and doing 120MPH on the Autobahn...but no longer.

Been a while for me too but I keep my eyes so far ahead on the road due to all the debris and crap on the highways I spend a lot of time on I usually spot them, combined with WAZE I can usually average about 95 on my 6 to 8 times/month 200 mile each way trips.

Last spring due to an emergency I put wife and offspring on a plane on way home halfway across country and drive the last 1000 miles myself. Did 1000 miles in about 14 hours including gas stops

Don’t know if it still works but back in lot the lates 90s on the Indian nation turnpike in OK you could surreptitiously leave a hundred $ biller or two filed up in your reg/insurance paperwork by “accident” and even stopped for 130 you would get your paperwork back sans the $ but no ticket. Saved me a trip to jail personally once.

I drive fast and get a ticket every two or three years. Cost of doing business. Totally worth it for the time I’ve saved.

I am an actual radar expert. The judge I had was unimpressed. I actually was not speeding (that time). When they want the money, they will get the money.

Every other time I’ve been ticketed I deserved it.

I helped a friend once with my expertise. The trooper, as it turned out, had the thickest glasses I’d ever seen on someone still allowed to drive when I met him before court. He didnt want to take a chance and asked the judge to dismiss.

So radar arguments have varying success.

Nothing worse than watching him U-turn in your rearview mirror. You know it’s you. Haven’t received a ticket in 10 years, just hate getting one so I rarely speed, or to be fair, only 3-4 over. Wife would get mad as well, double trouble.

Furthermore you do not have to spend all day in a defensive driving class.

No need to do that anyway ... it’s offered online and you can set your own pace.

If you get stopped for speeding, be sure to ask the officer to show you the license for the radar unit...the license has to be kept with the unit. Also ask to see the inspection certificate for the radar and see if it is up to date. If the officer can’t show you the above two things, he is violating FCC regulations! Take him to court. I went to court and the judge dismissed my case.

My nieces are lead foots, but they are nurses and always seem to get a pass.
The best advice however is to just slow down.

I usually get a speeding ticket about once every five years. And when I do I do the deferred adjudication. I used to take take defensive driving to get out of it. I haven’t taken a defensive driving course in at least 20 years.

But as I think about it, I ought to take a course now. Regardless of the fact that I don’t have a ticket pending. It really is helpful information that we need to be reminded of. And you can get a discount on your auto insurance.

Then this old beat-up Dodge Valiant pulled up next to me ...

Did it have a Hemi? They packed one into a Barracuda back then ...

You admitted that you were going 80 to 90.

Thats what will be presented in front of the judge. So beat it in court. See how that works out.

Keep the mouth shut and admit you were going a little fast. No more and no less. Most times they will let the driver off with a warning, unless, the driver was actually going 80 to 90 in a restricted speed zone-like 55.

Yep - i took the AARP driving course online last year. Not because i had to but to save $45/year on my insurance premiums. Paid $20 for the course.

My late father, my mother, and I received one speeding ticket each in our entire lives. All three of us were ticketed on the same tiny stretch of the New York State Thruway traveling to or from my college in the early 1980s. For all I know it could have been the same cop each time.
