Remember the kerfuffle about the end of the decade?
Hopefully 2020, regardless of which decade you think its in, will see the end of this meme
In an election year its always nice to have something irrelevant to argue about, which is why I dont intend to re-litigate the case between the decade originalists and the living-decade crowd. But if the decade isnt pragmatically over how could the American Dialect Society (ADS) have already selected their word of the decade, hmmm?
The personal singular pronoun they has been crowned the word of the decade by the American Dialect Society singular they was recognized for its growing use to refer to a known person whose gender identity is nonbinary**.
Ive got news for the ADS, the conscious use of they as a singular pronoun is hardly new, its been used that way for 50 years. Journalists, corporate supervisors, advertising copywriters and managers have agonized over how to handle this dilemma ever since radical Feminists in the 60s dictated the end of the sexist use of male pronouns to generically refer to both men and women. Should they pepper communications addressed to both men and women with multiple repetitions of the awkward his/her, he/she construct or blatantly choose to employ improper grammar by using the plural pronoun they when referring to a singular person of either sex? Most eventually chose the latter, the cowards way out.
So the gender-related, decades old intentional misuse of the singular they turned out to be a slippery slope. The new gender-related intentional misuse of the singular pronoun they also entails the intentional misuse of the previously non-gender-related term nonbinary.
And on that note Id just like to remind you that the decades over when I say its over. And I say its over; its definitely time to start over, this time with PDJT at the helm.
**Non-binary, or genderqueer, is a spectrum of gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminineidentities that are outside the gender binary.

I love the cat in all those memes. Funny has all getout.
The one thing I hope the new decade brings is a common and correct way to say each each year. Some people say “ two thousand twenty”. We should say “twenty twenty”. A hundred years ago people didn’t say “ one thousand nine hundred and twenty” for 1920.
Word of the decade: fake.
;Folks here in the mountains would just say, “You-ns”.
In many ways the 1960s began with the JFK assassination. and ended in 75 with the collapse of South Vietnam. History doesn’t neatly fall into the calendrical decades sometimes. The era of President Trump will hopefully overlap from the teens to the twenties.
Close - the 50’s ended when JFK was shot; the 60’s started when the Beatles landed in New York. The couple of months in between? Nobody knows what they were.
His name is Smudge.
Ok....I suppose it was a period of mourning for those who worshipped JFK. I was 6 at the time and had no idea who he was or anything. My only recollection was seeing a bit of the funeral on tv and thinking it was about someone important.
Yep. Gotta love him.
I had just turned three when JFK was killed - my earliest memory - very clear even now.
As a teen I couldn’t figure out why my dad didn’t like JFK (his womanizing primarily I think). I also could figure out why he hated FDR even more. (Now I do!)
Hey, have you ever seen that flick, Twenty Oh One, a Space Odyssey?
Even in the 3rd person?
the decade ends after the election...
the new decade begins during inauguration...
We are in the 20s now.
A person who is 20 is not a “teenager”.
Did the 60s end with the ousting of President Nixon?
Just for some reason the extreme opposite reactions, and the calm one being the cat, just makes it funny even without words.
*I was actually laughing the whole way through typing this thinking about it*
There is a Facebook page dedicated to him. Funny stuff.
