A head shot is not a big target.
Still, even a non-fatal head shot would likely have taken him out.
You are correct though, it is a level of competence many have attained.

One member of the volunteer church security team was Richard White. He was shot while drawing his pistol.
The second member, the head of the team, Jack Wilson, shot the perpetrator from about 40 feet, head shot, and stopped the threat.
About five or six more armed congregants converged on the downed attacker withing 30 more seconds.
So the term heroes is correct.
The first one was killed without getting a shot off.

Unknown. He had mental issues. I have heard he went off his meds.

On the video, I see only one immediately standing up and shooting one time ....... it took a few more seconds for others to move towards the downed perp
An interesting note is the news is reporting these men as a "voluntary security service", which I think is interesting.
I'm going to guess that is a way to "qualify" the shooters in church and protecting Jack Wilson from any prosecution.

It appeared to me to be a basic five shot tube shotgun magazine.
Looked like he did not have a round in the chamber to start.
What was in the backpack has not been released, to my knowledge.
This video will be used for training for years to come.

There was no crossfire. There was no mistaken identity shooting. Only three or four shots were fired. Two or three by the attacker, one by the defender.
NYPD and others, take notice.
The attacker had spoken to Richard white, moments before he drew his shotgun and pointed it at White.
Then Richard started to draw his concealed handgun. It looks like it was in a "Small of the Back" holster, or similar position.
The attacker then racks the shotgun and shoots Richard White.
White has his gun out, and gun hand extended and about 30 degrees up from vertical when he is shot.
The time from moment of start of draw to being shot is about 3.1 seconds.
Acceptable draw to fire times for police training is about 1.5 seconds.
It appeared to me the draw was hindered by position and clothing.
Richard was seated, and had to stand up to draw.
