Birmingham, Alabama has 53 times the National Average of Justifiable Homicides Image courtesy Dean Weingarten
In 2019, Birmingham, Alabama has reported a justifiable homicide rate 53 times the national average, as reported in the FBI Uniform Crime Reports.
11 of the reported homicides were ruled justifiable as self-defense by investigators or prosecutors and 3 resulted from reckless driving. The suspect in another murder was shot to death on the scene and another killed himself. One death resulted from a violent act committed the previous year. One other homicide took place at the Jefferson County Jail outside the city's jurisdiction. The police department, therefore, acknowledges 82 chargeable homicides. Suspects have been identified in 49 of those cases, arrested in 46 and charged in 41. Charges in one case were dismissed.
When justifiable homicides are carefully tracked, there are found to be more than five times as many as the FBI UCR records.

That means that a lot of people were not helpless victims of crime and criminals. What is wrong with this?
If the total number of homicides are close (the CDC has the figure at 19,510 for 2018), about 1/8th of homicides in the United States are justified.
If we use the CDC figures and estimate 2,500 justifiable homicides each year, the percent of justifiable homicides is 12.8%, with about 7.7% of those by non-police.
I’m thinkin’ that if she pulls the trigger all she’s gunna get is a click. Don’t see anything in the cylinder. But then again, always assume a gun is loaded.
You move there and put your money where your mouth is.
Oh, and bring your flag.
We can't let the cattle know that that sheep dogs won't always be around to protect them, or that in the end, the rancher doesn't have their best interest at heart.
Stories like this shatter the narrative that all guns are bad.
That’s a beefy underwire.
Prolly causes sagging.
Yeah I saw that too, empty and obviously just an inert set up photo op. :)
I don’t recognize what the revolver is or what caliber it is but it looks like an antique or reproduction and maybe .45 long Colt.
LOL, most of the Pentikostels I know are home in bed by 8:00. :-) Now the Amish, they are up all night.
Looks like it would be difficult to reach in a hurry.
1868 Tranter .442 rim fire some where around 50 still inexistence.
Who wants to take a guess at demographic background? Memphis on steroids.
Demographics my boy, demographics.
Its an 1868 model Tranter in .442 rimfire. Ammunition was only made for a few years. Any that you find is worth a small fortune as a collector item. The chances of it going bang after 150 years are likely no more than 80%.
Of course, with a little thought, a person could make ammunition for it...
Better to sell it (collector value over $1,000) and buy a nice new Glock with holster, extra magazines, and a couple thousand practice rounds...
The last time I was in Birmingham, I remember wanting to get the hell out of Birmingham.
The place isn't Liberia, but give it some time.

The last time I was in Birmingham,
Stopped at the gas station at the airport exit to refill the rental car. Had an older black man walk right up and start asking for money. Very bold in his request. Middle of the day and these Ner-do-wells begging for money.
I too was glad to be on the plane back to Texas, center earth!
Until recently, and possibly still true today, is that police homicides didn’t have to be reported, and so the information *wasn’t even collected*, leading to an obvious opportunity for under-reporting.
Problem is, in a mugging, the first thing the mugger grabs for is the purse. Now he's got your gun too.
Also, justifiable homicides are only a fraction of justifiable gun usages. For civilian cases, the ideal outcome involves no shots fire.
In my own case, I only had to draw on somebody once. He decided to turn and leave quickly, and I continued on my way. Didn't bother to file a police report, so it would not turn up in statistics.
