“Children are our future pole sports athletes and just like any sport we need to train our athletes from a young age,” a spokesperson for the International Pole Sports Federation said. The federation itself has been featuring children in the World Pole Sports Championships for the last three years and they also have a course dedicated to training children in the “sport” of pole dancing called the Youth Pole Sports Coaching course.

 

I'm afraid to ask. Is Pole Dancing now an Olympic Sport? If not, why not? Right up there with Girls Beach Volleyball.

It can simply be a form of gymnastics and strength training. In NYC in the 1960s, we had to do a lot of exercises shinnying up a large rope in the gym, hanging off it, trying to do other moves that were very similar, and using other gymnastics equipment for some of these moves. But there was nothing sexual about it. I think the problem is that pole-dancing is a sexualized version of basic gymnastic and strength moves using a rope or a pole, and it’s the sexualization part that is definitely not right.

Put it to music, fine, that helps people work beyond their limits and keep focused. But make sure it’s not the Bada Bing Room, or whatever that was in The Sopranos.

As a one-time gymnast (high school, 60’s) I am very impressed by this young lady’s routine. Pole or no pole, she has strength and grace; the pole just gives her a great way to demonstrate her control and ability.

Not sure I’d want her as a girlfriend, however. Looks like if you make one false move, she could break you in half. :-)

I’ve never seen a stripper work a pole (live), but I doubt it comes up to this high bar of talent.
