Not that long ago, or an eternity ago. NEVER FORGET!
In which one of the heroes was Rick Rescorla, whom President Trump honored recently for his heroism on 9/11.
Reescorla fought at X-Ray and Albany.

Aloha Ronnie (RIP) was always one to mention Rick, here is an old thread.
After the Trade Center was hit by the van in the basement, Rick got together with some of his other buddies (some vets) and tossed out the idea that the next time the terrorists hit they would do it with large hijacked planes. And he made his company do lots of drills with that in mind.
When the first tower got hit and the voice over the speakers told the second tower to stay there, Rick was already getting his people down the stairs! (Before it was confirmed it was an airplane strike.)
I met Lt Gen Moore at a military school and got him to sign his book for me. It is the only time I have ever asked for an author to sign his book and will probably be the last.

“We Were Shoulders” did it up right.
Thanks. I thought so.
We read Hal Moores book in officer candidate school. Great learning!

I have a taped segment somewhere where Jack Smith tells his story being in the battle, here is another version he told:

"Thirteen years ago, I watched the Berlin Wall come down and, as an ABC News correspondent, I witnessed firsthand on a number of trips the collapse of communism. The policy of containment worked. We won the Cold War. And however meaningless Vietnam seemed at the time, it contributed to the fall of communism."
The following link provides a slightly different view of the action in the Ia Drang Valley. While most observations note the brutal combat over a few days the story here presents the overall view and the role this one operation played in a larger tactical action.
A New Look at Ia Drang - Recent findings offer another view of the famous 1965 battle
