Flight shaming is gaining traction and could cost airlines billions

Consumers are paying more attention to their carbon footprint and it could cost airlines billions of dollars, Citi said in a note to clients Tuesday.

The firm said that "flight shaming," which it defines as "the inherent guilt that an individual feels as a result of one's aviation-related carbon footprint" is causing consumers to explore alternative modes of transportation when possible and to look for ways to offset their carbon emissions.

Citi estimates that over the next five years the cost of carbon offsetting economy flights will grow to $3.8 billion per year. It will either be absorbed by the consumer or the airline. But really the airline gets hit in both scenarios since if the price is absorbed by passengers the higher cost could lead to an overall slowdown in air travel.

"If this burden were to be fully absorbed by the consumer, our price elasticity analysis shows that there would be a shortfall in volume growth of -0.4% per annum vs. current forecasts. And while this does not sound detrimental, if this onus were to fall on the (largely fixed cost base) airlines, the cost of carbon offsetting all leisure consumption could be as much as c.27% of airlines' profits by 2025," analysts led by Mark Manduca wrote.

Riiight. Passengers put up with being squeezed into seats built for children, put up with horrific security lines ending with a grope from some TSA slob, put up with charges for baggage and food, but "shame over carbon consumption" is going to put them off.

“Gaining traction” = “Building up steam” = some reporter with a vivid fantasy life trying to spin it as fact. Nobody flies anymore, it’s too crowded.

Of course you were in deluxe first class with your own enclosed suite, private chef and man servant.

Yeah, I would love for all the envirowackos to stay at home - the gates & flights are all too crowded - but then the airlines would just start cutting flights or raising prices...

This is also payback for all the ways airlines have tried to screw passengers over with downgrades in space/legroom, Spirit-airlines type service across the board, and I dunno...initiating pit bulls and things as comfort animals?

Oh and Deep State Boeing’s insane corruption levels.

MSN. I don’t believe ANYTHING I read on the MSN anymore. It is complete, manufactured propaganda designed to “create” a movement or culture. Then when you actually look at the numbers, you find these “movers and shakers” are actually 2 or 3% of people.

I know a LOT of liberals. Even the most left of them are STILL flying and buying SUVs. When the rubber meets the road, so to speak, they can’t or aren’t going to change their lifestyle all that much. They give lip service, that’s it, and lecture US.

Leftists and all these hipsters have been sold that traveling all over the world, experiencing different cultures and such is necessary to “broaden” oneself. You aren’t going to do that by walking there. I use less “carbon” than 95% of most leftists I know because they HAVE to go to Japan or the Galapagos to see the whales or whatever, and they can’t swim there, for sure.

Awww, sucks! Does this mean fewer vids of midflight meltdowns and airport a-holes?

Ironically, traveling by air is the most energy efficient and lowest carbon footprint means of travel

Wind powered sailing ships, nuclear powered aircraft carriers, and nuclear powered submarines have the best carbon footprints.

Sucks to be you. I fly for a living and have flown probably 6 million miles globally. Maybe another 500k traveling on vacation globally. The world is an amazing place. Most of the amazement is outside of north America.

Oh H3ll, the same people doing this crap are the ones that are so broke spending all their money on pizza, new phones, music downloads, etc., that they don’t have a pot to wizz in, but they got’s their drug money, but no IRA or 401K. Literally, they are only people renouncing flight because, well they’ll already maxed out the credit lines - so good on them and get out the ticket line.

I don’t know any consumers who are, including me. I just don’t give a rat’s rear end about it.
