My Worst-Case Impeachment Scenario
Vanity | Oct 18, 2019 | Matt Bracken

Posted on 10/18/2019 6:17:47 AM PDT by Travis McGee

Here is my worst-case impeachment scenario.

A. Adam Schiff's kangaroo inquiry secretly drafts articles of impeachment. Their validity matters not one whit.

B. The articles of impeachment (valid or bogus, it doesn't matter) go to the house floor. It passes easily, with every Democrat and some GOP congressmen voting to send it to the senate for an impeachment trial.

C. Mitch McConnell immediately moves for a full Senate trial. He has already said he would do this, and I think I know why: his family is just as corrupt as the Biden family, and he wants Trump's swamp-draining to end ASAP, before Trump's anti-corruption push eventually moves on to other corrupt senators, including himself.

D. 20+ GOP senators vote to convict Trump, shocking the nation and the world, and leading to his removal from office.

IMHO, some GOP senators will do it to hide their own corruption from further examination. Some will do it because of their personal animosity toward President Trump. Some will do it because they are already under deep state (corrupt FBI/CIA) blackmail control. Some will do it for the favors they will be promised following Trump's removal. Some will do it because they are just plain ornery contrarians.

Here is a list of 18 GOP senators who I think could vote to convict Trump in a full senate impeachment trial. Throw in a few total surprises (blackmail, etc) and the result might just shock the world. They only need 20. Here is my list of 18 (so far) potential GOP votes against Trump. Please let me know if you totally disagree with any of these possible votes to convict Donald Trump, or if you have some more senate GOP names for my list.

1. Mitch McConnell KY 2. Mitt Romney UT 3. Ben Sasse NE 4. Susan Collins ME 5. Ron Johnson WI 6. Richard Burr NC 7. Roger Wicker MS 8. Lisa Murkowski AK 9. Lamar Alexander TN 10 Mike Lee UT 11. Marco Rubio FL 12. Joni Ernst IA 13. Martha McSally AZ 14 Cory Gardner CO 15. Roy Blunt MO 16. Rob Portman OH 17. Pat Toomey PA 18. Rand Paul KY

Naturally, I hope I'm totally wrong, and I hope that freepers will convince me that this scenario is impossible.

I don’t see that scenario happening. The GOP will cease to exist as a viable political party if they ever push Trump out of office.

No more than a third of those would vote for impeachment, Matt.

You are right to play the scenario, but way overestimating their willingness to impeach.

Any Senator voting to impeach Donald Trump is voting to be an ex-Senator.

The blowback from such an action would be huge.

Cells, baby, cells.

The logical conclusion to this imaginary scenario is Pence becomes President, but before the last words of the Oath are out of his mouth, Democrats are talking about his “collusion with the deposed Trump” and begin impeachment proceedings, which of course are heard in the Senate who removes Pence. This leads to the rise of President Pelosi and Swamp business as usual. Assuming that the American people go quietly into the night ...

Articles of impeachment will be voted on in the House before the end of the year. What happens after that is anyone’s guess.

Trump knows where all the skeletons are buried - and has the evidence. If you were a republican, and you had a skeleton in your closet, would you vote against Trump? He'd expose you in a heartbeat. Your only chance would be to stay on the good side of the Trump team.

I don’t think the senate would vote to convict for one simple reason... They have to know it would lead to massive civil unrest and wide scale rioting and would put their lives in danger. I don’t know if it would be CW2 but there are tens of millions of Americans who would not be happy. There are enough people in the US that would probably attempt to start picking them off.

The trial will allow Trump to mount his defense. Currently all public is hearing is the leaks designed to hurt Trump. Trump will campaign in states where senators are weak and he is strong. Also he will make deals and put pressure on opponents like he does with foreign governments and California.

I think it’s far more Mitt gets enough traitors to give the Rats their majority to convict but short of the votes to remove. A majority to convict will hurt Trump no question. The rats wil use it as a hammer throughout 20.

Throw in a sudden push by the GOPe for a Pence/Pompeo 2020 ticket (already in play with the glowing remark by Karl Rove Over the Turkey/Syria mediation) and you have your impeachment trial trigger.

Anything is possible but most of those Republicans are smart enough to realize that in most states the Republican party will lose its base voters. What candidate would everyone who was furious that Trump got removed from power vote for in 2020? Or, since you are good at analyzing situations where passions have overtaken the law, would it even be possible to hold an ordinary election that the nation respected the outcome of in 2020 if Trump was removed from office?

Removing a president from office is an extreme political act. Any Republican who thinks they could roll back the opinions and ideas of the voters that elected President Trump by impeaching him is crazy. A more likely outcome is a chaotic political landscape where there will be truly radical political candidates and parties. The Democrats are already heading in that direction, if the Republicans do the same thing the liberals worst nightmare might well get elected after their initial victories.

"The GOP will cease to exist as a viable political party..."

More than just the GOP will cease to exist. Removing Trump from office after three years of manufactured scandal would plunge this country into a war that would leave the republic in tatters. The only way for us to survive as a republic (at least in the short term) is for POTUS to beat the impeachment garbage and be re-elected for a second term. And even then he may have gained enemies in the form of RINO senators and congresscritters who had previously hoped/believed that the 'Rats would succeed in taking him down while they kept silent or feigned tepid support for Trump.
