MIDDLETOWN, N.J. It was only 7 a.m., but for the commuters stewing inside a Spartan train station in this bedroom community, the day was already off to a predictably bad start.
Their train, North Jersey Coast Line 2606, which is supposed to depart at 7:06 a.m., had been canceled. Again.
This time the 18th cancellation of the year the official explanation was equipment availability resulting from a mechanical issue. But these aggrieved riders in Middletown did not seem to care. They had heard all the excuses the railroad had to offer. All that really mattered was that they were not getting to work on time. Again.
This is the plight of the hundreds of people who depend on what just may be the worst commuter train in America. The railroad they ride, New Jersey Transit, has been plagued for the last two years by a rash of cancellations.

Hey, I live here. You want to see the worst in America? Try California or New York.
Leonard Rossiter was fantastic in that role. A very well written and acted program.
GROT shops indeed
I thought the USPS was private?
Amtrak, signal issues every Friday and dozens of conductor constantly calling out
After 42 years in the workforce, I never once was late to work due to a vehicle malfunction. The worst thing that ever happened was my daily driver transmission went into limp mode a few miles from home. I drove it back home, got my pickup and still made it to work with time to spare. I’m so thankful I never had to endure the hell that is public transportation.
>>Has it ever been on time for a whole 5 day working week?
Your using the wrong measure for “success”. All the janitors and ticket punchers are retiring on 6-figure pensions and the purple-haired, non-gender-binary Assistant Director for Inclusion and Diversity draws a 7-figure salary, with “working conferences” in high-end resort locations every couple of months. With all that, who cares if the trains run on time, if ever?

Can't speak to trains but I took a bus from Hackensack area of NJ to NYC for years. Depending on traffic, trip took at least 40 minutes, usually more. With bad traffic or an accident, much more.
Bus terminated at NY side of George Washington Bridge. From there you could take subways to just about anywhere.
Just throw a dart at the New Jersey kakistocracy board. You can’t miss.
Since St Kitts scenic railway is part of the Americas. Their train around the Island derailed twice while i was on it in about a 30 mile ride a few years back.
Easy now...:-)
So how far was that and how is it more convenient than driving?
BOL!
The same analogy works for California whenever our politicians get involved with helping the public.

Yeah, PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION!!!!
Sparta is NW NJ. The North Coast Line heads to the Jersey RZ shore. The local stops at crap holes like Linded, Newark and Perth Anboy
When I commuted from Hazlet to Newark it was great to take express. I recall that train always being on time. I moved from Jersey in 2007.
That train line mostly serves Monmouth County commuters to Newark & NYC.
Electric trains and seamless tracks.
Things must changed the past decade. The Express was great. 40 minutes to Newark. The Locsl was 1:05. Usually I could count on it being on schedule in boud, outbound did have delays sometime, JMHO.
I can tell you what does suck, Atlanra mass transit. Buses and no MARTA towards Cobb.
Moving
Africans
Rapidly
Through
Atlanta
Don’t underestimate your self. It is NEVER too late. Do it! We left the WDC area after 30+ years. Free at last! Thank God...Free at last!!!
When I moved into the city, if I found street parking, I'd leave my car there for two weeks, or more, and take the subway. I could take the subway to within steps of the office.
Remember, however. Once you got away from the old city, and it's old system, you are SOL. Buses don't work.
Sorry, but for me it is too late.......and good for you.
I work in NYC and my co-workers who commute from NJ are late to work quite often.
I commute from Connecticut on Metro North and I must say that it is reliable over 99.5% of the time and have only been late 2 or 3 times in the last five years. And even then, it was no more than a half hour.
People love to complain but the Metro North is a very well run operation.
My nephews still take this train every day to NYC. As they pass Fort Monmouth, they often hear Reveille. They both have heavy-duty jobs and have been up for hours already. People look at one another: The soldiers are just waking up?
