Here it is Sunday on the last holiday weekend of the summer and it looks like we are going to enjoy another 6 weeks of summer as the Wolverines won their opener against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders. If the way they won is any indication though it could well be an ugly 6 weeks.
Indeed, as I speak, Dorian continues its march to wreak havoc on landfall somewhere yet to be determined.
And slowly Im coming to the realization that, once again, I forgot all about Burning Man, the week-long hedonistic celebration dedicated to anti-consumerism and self-expression. Sadly for Burners the super rich seem to be taking the festival for their own, with more Wall Street and Silicon Valley capitalists turning it into their version of nirvana, which requires the burning of a lot of money and drugs.
The Man burns in temporary Black Rock City, Nevada on August 31, 2019
In case you too have overlooked the cultural significance of this annual event, allow me to explain:
Burning Mans mission is to produce an annual event in the middle of the Nevada dessert in order to guide, nurture and protect the more permanent community created by its culture. It describes itself as a "temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance."
I have no idea what that means or how to interpret it. But here are Burning Man's 10 principles:
- Radical inclusion
- Gifting
- Decommodification
- Radical self-reliance
- Radical self-expression
- Communal effort
- Civic responsibility
- Leaving no trace
- Participation
- Immediacy
Again, I note that I either dont comprehend or condone any of them with the possible exception of civic responsibility although Im willing to bet that in the context of Burning Man it doesnt mean what I think it means. But my goodness, it looks creative!
I dont know though, Labor Day just really isnt what it used to be.
I prefer the old fashioned variety.

There used to be only two principles for Burning Man.
* Hedonism.
* Do not harm another.
Burning Man ain’t a social Justice thing.
Burning Man? I’ll be (not) burning burgers and hot dogs this weekend..
I’m thinking of setting up a booth on the perimeter next year. I’ll sell Valtrex and penicillin.
I guess I don’t see much difference between this “event” and pagan “festivals” like Walpurgis Night or Saturnalia. Give the attendees some coarse robes and put them at Stonehenge, and this could be something right out of a Druid’s wet dream.
You will want to sell more than that.
Condoms, weed, ecstasy, and DMT?
The Left has ruined it, like they have everything else.
sounds like a good (possibly Divine) idea?
sounds like a good (possibly Divine) idea?
oops, wrong thread, sorry
Burning man is even more boring now....
Soooo, losing one’s self in something like Burning Man is going to help everybody find each other in the same Lost and Found? If I thought I was hopelessly lost in the world I think I might go to one of these things. I’d probably be looking for something “supernatural” about it and not know whether I was still lost or not when it’s time to go home.
What? The aging hippies at Burning Man forgot to do a special memorial of the 50th of Woodstock?
Is nothing sacred?
;^)
Woodstock was not supernatural. It just rained like hell.
>The Left has ruined it, like they have everything else.
Got that right. No one is better then sucking the fun out of things than the left. I’m just sayin’
But weren’t/aren’t both of them major countercultural events?
BTW, every now and then I do see aging hippies, some are couples, others ponytailed loners of indeterminate sex. Talk about age-inappropriate clothing, & beards that look dangerous around machinery!
I’m their age & Vietnam vet, FWIW. But I still shave most mornings, get a haircut monthly, no tatts or metal, and am known to go out in public wearing slacks w/sox & shoes, dress shirt, & a sport coat. Voted for Trump, too.
Guess I represent the new counterculture.
;^)
“Guess I represent the new counterculture.”
Me too!
Reserved camp space is marked on the playa with blue survey flags. Some of these plots are so large that they may appear unclaimed and available, when they actually are not. Be sure to camp outside the blue flagged zones to avoid encroaching on reserved zones and then having to relocate your camp. For walk-in camping located between 2:00 and 5:00 park your vehicles across L street at the flag fence, and set up your camp outside the parking flag fence. Note: Walk-in camping is for people who drove their cars into BRC but dont camp with their cars. You still need a vehicle pass to drive in and park before carrying your gear to walk-in camping.
So there you are! Isn’t it fun being a lonely rebel?
Which means you can think for yourself.
Hope there’s enough of us to reelect PDJT.
