this was a real case of "hands up don't shoot" as the dude stealing the bike did give up, put his hands up and just stood there but was tazed anyway. This story happened in Glendale, Arizona Tommy's former home.

Sounds like aggravated assault to me.

Sometimes a JBT just has to shoot SOMETHING.

150 years ago, that bike would have been a horse. They used to hang horse thieves. So, to me, a simple tase is a minor issue.

I’ve had bikes and other property stolen, so I have no sympathy for thieves.

Bike thieves should be treated like horse thieves in the old west.

How did the cops miss the bicycle thief's nuts? That would have been way more entertaining!

The video does not include audio so we don’t know what orders the police were giving the perpetrator and if he was resisting those orders. It could be that he was ordered to lay face down and instead started backing away. That could be construed as resisting.

People don’t understand that when police give you an order, you comply. If not, you’re placing yourself at risk.

I’ve had many a bike stolen, and it’s really irritating. Thieves suck.

Still, this is a completely unnecessary use of force. Perhaps the cops know that nothing is going to happen to the punk, so the tasing is really all the punishment he’s going to get. Even so, the cop is out of line with the PD policy.

That’s bullshit. There’s no way he could have complied with an order to lie down in the time given there. For one thing with cops screaming at you and pointing weapons at you, you’re going to be very confused at a minimum. Still, his hands are up and he’s not resisting.

I know, I know, it’s fun to tase people, especially kids. It has to give those cops a “charge” you might say, but they can’t do it like this.

Looks like cop maybe out of line, though it is possible he was resisting. Either way it is a good reason to riot, burn the city down and loot

As a cop for a long time, I can tell you the only way this might have been justified is if the kid was saying something like “You’re going to have to fight me” or “I have a gun and I’m going to use it” or something to that affect. Looks to me like the cops had tunnel vision and even though they were the ones walking towards the perp, all they “saw” was the perp getting closer to them.

Well, if he HADN’T stolen something, HADN’T committed a crime, he wouldn’t have been tased.

VERY true. There are many cases of people getting shot just because they misunderstood a cop’s orders. And that’s all on the cop. He is supposed to be the trained professional.

As just one example, here’s a motorist who was stopped by a cop. The cop asks the guy for his drivers license. The guy reaches for his license, and gets shot.

Bikes can easily cost $500 or more. I’d like to see the guy get his ‘nads kicked through the top of his skull, but the cops aren’t the people to be doing it.

Except for internationally adopted rules of engagement, of course. I like to think society evolves through time. Any brutality shown to someone who has surrendered is criminal.

True enough. But that’s a dangerous road to go down. “Yeah, chief. I stopped that Karma_Sherab guy for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign. He seemed agitated. So For my own safety I had to tase him.”
