Column: Make America’s infrastructure great again
The Valley News ^ | August 17, 2019 | Sarwar Kashmeri

Fixing the nation’s infrastructure was a key Trump campaign pledge that he has not been able to meet because of its trillion-dollar cost. With China’s help, he could get the project started in a few months.

If this idea sounds far-fetched, just take a look at Boston. In 2014, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority selected China’s CRRC Corp., the world’s largest rail manufacturer, to replace all 400 of Boston’s commuter rail cars. As The Boston Globe reported, the cars will be assembled in a new factory, already built by China, in Springfield, Mass., under the $843 million contract. The project will ultimately create 300 new jobs and jump-start a rail car manufacturing business in the state. In fact, within three years of the contract signing, more than 100 people were already employed at the Springfield factory, and Massachusetts had signed contracts to supply CRRC rail cars to Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

That America’s infrastructure is in dire straits is no secret. Using American Society of Civil Engineers data, The Wall Street Journal recently reported that more than 9 percent of the nation’s bridges require significant maintenance, rehabilitation or replacement, at an estimated cost of $123 billion. America’s highways need $713 billion to fix a backlog of upgrades and repairs. After leaving New York’s aging John F. Kennedy International Airport, Rachel, heroine of the recent hit movie Crazy Rich Asians, arrives in Singapore’s gleaming new Changi Airport and bursts out in wonder at its butterfly garden and movie theater. “JFK is just salmonella and despair,” she exclaims — a sentiment with which many JFK passengers will heartily agree.

If this guy had been alive in 1941, he would have been suggesting that we have Japan build our military bases.

Yea, I know. Where he comes from, wherever that is, street law probably prevails. It is tough for these shop owners, they come here and have to work their private parts off to make a little money, usually in crappy areas. But they still have to follow OUR LAW. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t even know what was in store for him, when he started shooting at the underage drinker.

“I thought President Obama fixed all the infrastructure?”

Nope. As Trump said in the 2016 campaign, we have huge infrastructure needs. I wish he had leaned on Ryan and McConnell, when GOP had the Congress, to make good on his infrastructure promises

We would need less infrastructure and fewer repairs if we had not imported 50 million Third World immigrants and anchor babies.

States should be taking advantage of historically low interest rates (artificially low)... to finance infrastructure needs now. 30 year bond rates couldn’t be much lower. The Feds are broke, and what are some examples of Federal infrastructure that need fixing? Not too many I would imagine. Older Federal buildings & military bases, FAA infrastructure (towers at airports). Maybe some Energy Dept. stuff? Can’t think of too many more.

Ryan and McConnell? LOL.

The GOP only cares about spending billions of dollars on infrastructure in the Middle East, not here in the U.S.

I was driving on a stretch of highway the other day, and I saw a sign that said:

"You're Tax Dollars At Work! $240 Million Widening Project!

Really? More than a quarter of a Billion dollars to widen a few miles of one highway?

The corruption and waste is mind boggling.

Yes, our infrastructure is in bad shape. Our bridges alone need so much work that we better do something, fast.

But we all know that once these projects begin, the corruption that siphons off billions of dollars is obscene.

The infrastructure in the US is pretty good. Not perfect, but pretty good.

“But we all know that once these projects begin, the corruption that siphons off billions of dollars is obscene. ”

Which is why Democrats want it. Check out the history of the Big Dig in Boston.
