Your description is more like the terrible reality we will be in.
Some Freepers have a fantasy of how great CWII will be.
It will destroy most of us, our children, grand kids and those not even conceived yet, unless it is over in a week or less.
Destruction of our communication systems, roads, railroads and shipment of food and other things we need daily will make us worse than any third world $hithole country in weeks.
If it drags on for a couple of years, basically every fertile woman will have her life cut short due to lack of food, water and stability in her home. My Dad’s Mother and her Sisters, who were born during CCWI or right after it, were lucky to make it past their mid 20’s before dying young.
Also, our enemies will take advantage of the opportunity to kill survivors of both sides.
Our borders on both Oceans and on land, North and South will cease to exist. Countless foreign and armed marauders will invade, attack, rape and kill any American Survivors. The lucky ones will be those are killed quickly.
Luckily we have the States. And I think some States will rise to the occassion and maintain order. But, it's really hard to say and it could become a war of all-against-all, as you suggest.
A lot depends on what the military does in a CWII. If our strategic forces remain intact, especially the SSBN force and remains on station no foreign power should intervene militarily for risk of annihilation.
I do think we end up breaking up with the coasts and north east going with the communists and unless a truce is worked out quickly they will be decimated by starvation. Their gangs will head to the red states and most will be slaughtered quickly and not tolerated.
The mid-west, mountain and southern states stay together and state governments continue to operate and seize former US military installations. That being said there will be violence in all states as conservatives in red states will simply not tolerate further abuse and it will come down to brother against brother in some cases. Initially in all states it will be bloody and our children will see it and be casualties in it.
I can’t help but wonder back to watching the tv series in the 1980’s North and South where George Hazard and Orry Main are standing on a depot platform, Fort Sumter has been fired on and they are questioning each other, is there somewhere where we could have stopped this before it got to this point...
Is "living" like this any better than being dead? I ask myself this every morning.

... and the principal characters are laughing it up over accidental alien-produced fireworks.
The end of The War of the Worlds [1953 ?] was at least more realistic.
