My 80yr old widowed mother just got a letter from the local office of the USDA *telling* her that their people were going to be on her property doing a 'grazing land inventory' survey using 'equipment'. She was given no choice to opt out of this or any other contact information.
What are her rights in this matter? She does NOT want to let strangers with 'equipment' on her property. We've heard too many bad things about abuse of power and 'privilege' from fedgov wrt property rights and land use.
This has never been a ‘crop’ property since my parents have lived there.
It’s a ‘house place’ with a 10ac ‘front yard’.
Find a way to contact a local militia and set up a roadblock and cordon. It’s HER land, not theirs.
Contact a licensed attorney and have them send a letter.
We’d rather try the lawyer route first...
Ya. We’ve decided we’ll have to do that.
Can USDA reimburse our legal fees for that? (sarcasm, sadly)(maybe the tides foundation can cough up a few bux...)

I would think there might be similar generalizations about corporate takeovers or whatever.

It also seems like an initial survey was completed several years ago and they are doing “re-visits” so you may have had them there before.
You may need to do some more research here before building redoubts and reinforcing them with artillery.
Since you are not in the business of raising livestock, they have NO legitimate reason to “survey” your property. Which implies illegitimate reasons.
My advice is to step away from the keyboard, right now, and get on the phone with your attorney. A few bucks spent on a lawyer now, may just save you a lot of grief later.

It’s a shame we have to be so suspicious of their intentions.
But the fact that their ‘affiliates’ are a bunch of people hating, private property hating, ecowacko jerks is proof enough they’re not to be trusted.
Most rural surveys for land use managment, crop surveys, CRP compliance etc. can be done through remote sensing, especially now that LIDAR is available. physical surveys on the property sounds to me like a search for noxious weeds, endangered species, and bodies of water. Danger, Will Robinson. Get a lawyer.

Exactly our thoughts. It’s a fishing expedition. And not for our benefit.
And these are the guys that have been caught TAKING endangered species and noxious weeds on to private property.
Sounds like you’re correct. Your property is highly likely already surveyed for deed/tax purposes. For what possible reason would someone from the gubmint want to come onto your property?
Hummm. Interesting. My guess is that they could be stopped but you would probably need a lawyer to do it. If you are friendly with the local sheriff you may get them to stop it or at least monitor the workers.

Contact your nearest NRCS office and talk to them. They may have bad data but in any case you can make them explain it in detail.
That won’t cost anything.
This is just a guess, it is a public/private collaboration.
The other guess is that your mother’s property might have originally been farmland and the owner parceled it out but is still in the system as active agriculture land. As I said call the local NRCS.
