Best 22 Rifle for Plinking and Hunting
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 6/10/2019 | J Ellis

Debates have come across stating that the .22 rifle is not a serious caliber for those into guns. The .22 caliber doesn’t have the knock down power to take down a medium size game or let alone stop an attacker inside your home.

From a survivalist needs, the .22 caliber is one of the many invaluable source to have when feeding yourself and family. For small game like rabbits and squirrels, the .22 caliber is perfect. Using a larger caliber is just a poor choice of tools for this task. The availability and pricing for the .22 caliber is on the cheap side.

On the recreational side of the house, the .22 caliber serves many things to a wide variety. Beginner shooters will find starting with this caliber helps build a solid foundation in marksmanship. For the target shooter and plinker you can have lots of fun shooting many rounds at a lower cost.

There are many good .22 caliber rifle out on the market. Getting one would be based on what you are going to use it for. Here are some key features to look out for:
Magazine Capacity - A good magazine section to look for is the rotary type under the stock of the gun. The magazine can hold 5 to 35 rounds. For hunting you probably don’t need a high capacity magazine, but for plinking and target shooting the more the merrier. Be sure to follow your state legal limitations on this.

Sights – Most plinking are probably done without any special scopes. Not to say that using an optical system isn’t worth it – its your preferences. Getting a specific type for plinking and hunting is beyond the scope of this article.

Ruger 10/22 - Ruger makes some really top notch rifles in big calibers and the .22 is no exception. Its great to see Ruger invest its time into our American classic. (since 1964) The 10/22 historically is a favorite among hunters, this was design with practicality in mind and able to maintain under field conditions.
Henry AR-7 Survival Rifle - Originally designed in 1959 for use by the United States Air Force but is now a favorite among civilians for all the same reasons it was popular with military pilots. The AR-7 Survival Rifle is lightweight (only 3.5 lbs.), reliable, and compact. Read the rest of best 22 sniper rifle.

I love the old Marlin bolt actions. I had a 783 .22 Mag that was a very very good little pop gun.

I also have a Marlin Model 60, but it misfires frequently. I “borrowed” an old Winchester bolt action from my mother in law. Can’t remember the model. It’s probably 60-70 years old. Fun shooter.

I’m a NRA rifle instructor and use it when giving classes.

Iver Johnson Cycle Shop, single shot bolt action, .22 short, long.

The sixth generation of this family is just about ready to shoot it.

Best .22 semi-auto rifle I’ve ever had is the Remington Nylon 66. Too bad they don’t make them anymore.

I have a Ruger 10/22 and put a Simmons 9x/32mm sight on it. Very accurate up to 100 yards. I lob rounds in at 200 yards.

At 59 I’ve scoped (or put a red dot optic) on every single long gun except for a couple old C&R rifles.

For the .22 rifles we LOVE the Nikon Rimfire BDC scopes. Great value for the money. And the drops are all set. Use the Nikon software and every shot is a winner.

Best,

L

From the article:

There is something most people don’t know, you can take the 39A rifle with a coin.

What does that mean?

Mine is from the 60’s and probably been fired more than 50000 times but always goes bang and is plenty accurate....if i had to walk off into the wilderness with one gun that might my choice

As far as favorite 22...my ancient winchester model 63 is it by far..not nearly as rugged or reliable as the nylon 66 but it handles and points like a dream

Ive had several 10/22s over the years, good rifles but they always have felt clunky to me

My favorite of all of my 22’s is my Savage-Anschutz 54, which I inherited from my Dad, beautiful gun. My sentimental favorite, which I’ve put 10’s of thousands of rounds through, is the 1966 Browning T-Bolt my dad gave me for my first gun. It’s still in great shape, shoots great, and is super easy to clean.

My all around 22 is Ruger 10/22, which I own a few of. The one I shoot most is a carbine model. Great shooters, but kind of a pain to clean, and they get finicky if not kept pretty clean.

Why is the writing so atrocious on this blog? Honestly, I can’t make it through the first paragraph of one of their articles without throwing in the towel.

A .22 pellet rifle would be invaluable and a tin of 500 pellets is only around $9

Speaking of Dad guns, my dad had a Remington Nylon 66. He plinked a lot of small game with it. He had lots of rifles/shotguns in various calibers, but this was one of his favorites.

The plastic stock was quite a novelty. And the 14 round tubular magazine was kind of unique.

Unfortunately he died when I was 10 and my older brother inherited all the guns. I don’t know if he still has it or not.

NRA Life member here.
The Marlin was my step-dad’s.
The lever action is loose now but still works.
Maybe due for a gun smithing...

My personal favorite is the 572’s granddaddy, the Remington model 12. Inherited it from my dad, the action is slicker than a used car salesman, it's accurate and has sent a number of jack rabbits to the great alfalfa field in the sky.
