Abortion and Conservatism

Abortion is front and center of most political debates currently. The recent wave of pro-Life legislation in Alabama, Georgia, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, and Mississippi have good intentions from good people, but the approach is fundamentally flawed. They are trying to legislate something which essentially does not belong to that domain. The abortion issue is fundamentally not political, and Conservatives should not follow the examples of the totalitarian left who try to legislate toward the erosion of Capitalism on their path to Socialism. These recent pro-Life laws take aim only at the Supreme Court. They are states’ answers to Roe v. Wade and do not have any other purpose except to overturn it.

It has been noticed before that Supreme Court decisions are very often in line with the current popular mood. The Supreme Court should never bow to political pressure. However, plaintiffs have a feeling of moral and ideological support of either the popular president or majority of Congress, as such they make cases destined exclusively for the Supreme Court. In other words, petitioners get a dose of bravery due to a political tailwind. On the surface, it looks like the Supreme Court is sometimes decidedly in favor of the prevailing political ideology of official Washington.

Such was the situation with Roe v. Wade. The case was decided in January 1973, shortly after the election of 1972 in which President Richard Nixon carried 49 states even though Democrats held majorities in both House and Senate. A similar situation occurred in 2012 when the Supreme Court decided in favor of Obamacare. However, after 2016 and the complete exoneration of President Trump of any wrongdoing in 2019 by Special Counsel Mueller, the judicial and political pendulum swung to the other side.

Every election this gets trotted out to beat Republicans. And they take the bait. This time the argument is a bit different but end of day, Republicans will lose on the argument. Why not keep focus on immigration such, on the great economy instead of once again arguing about abortion. Leave abortion for congress to deal with. How many good candidates will lose for this issue, how many Democrats will win because of it?

I am not clicking on Gary’s link, but I’d say he should put a sock in it.

I disagree, and I could be Completely wrong.

It happens often :)

I don’t think many, if any, seats are lost by Rs because of this issue. That’s what msm pushes as its narrative to frighten us.

Just like the “you can’t run a conservative for president!! It has to be somebody who can win!!” mantra.

I also don’t see a dem winning because of this issue. At least not in a district or state they weren’t going to win anyway.

I know NO ONE, left or right or center, who votes on this issue alone.

And even if the left did, we NEVER had their vote to begin with.

Especially NOW, after PROVING that a conservative CAN WIN, now is NOT THE TIME TO FEAR.

But to strike.

To be fully informed on Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton one must read the Senate Testimonies of Norma McCorvey and Sandra Cano, the Roe and Doe of these cases.

“you can’t run a conservative for president!! It has to be somebody who can win!!”

You know, like Bob Dole, John McCain, and Mitt Romney. electable candidates like that.

Not that Reagan guy or that Trump guy. They can't possibly win. It would be Goldwater all over again.

Pro-Life voters are are more likely to vote en bloc for one candidate on that one issue alone; pro-abort people, by contrast, are all about dividing their vote among a dozen other sometimes-competing or "intersectional" issues.

This makes pro-life a highly viable political position.

Plus, from a principled point of view, the one foundational rationale for having a government at all, is to protect us all from aggression, force and fraud.

Abortion is an obvious and widespread instance of aggression, force and fraud. If government will not do that, t'hell with government.

LOL

Boy did you slam that point home. :)

Why do people NOT BELIEVE the majority of the country does not want abortion, or at least want it curtailed?

Starting from a position of fear is NEVER the answer.

I do not believe we lose house or senate seats over this issue.

I’m not a single issue voter but some matters are so important that you can’t get my vote if you’re wrong on them. If the GOP wants my vote for president in 2020, they will have to nominate someone who provides good reason to believe that he or she will do what their oath of office says they’ll do: support and defend the Constitution. Any presidential candidate who doesn’t understand how the Constitution’s clear language that “No person shall be deprived” of their life without due process applies to abortion, well, they don’t meet my minimum standard for support, and I’ll do what I can raise up someone who does. I’m glad I was able to help FReepers be in a position to win the Electoral College in 2008, 2012 and 2016 if enough others voted for them.

I think plain and simple murder is indeed political. It’s a civil issue. It needs judicial punishment. Law.

They made it political. And it remains a moral issue.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness: includes the preborn.

No, I disagree with abortion just like everyone else. My problem is that Democrats trot this out every election, Republicans (conservatives) fall for it and the election gets wrapped around this, completing ignoring other issues. Right now abortion is not going to end, better to win elections with winnable issues, deal with abortion later. Besides, we are making progress on this issue.
