We are thinking about relocating to North West Virginia (Winchester area?) in the next year. All my research says it's a nice place but I would appreciate anyone with local knowledge to help. I know it's kind of "blue", but coming from Washington state anything will be better than what I deal with now. Feel free to freep mail or reply.
U still in Shen Val?
Has it changed for you over the years?
My mothers family were near Orkney Springs and I spent my summers age 5 to 15 there. Was last back 3 years ago and it has not changed that much.
Bryces resort and many resort homes but still quaint.
I see from earlier posts your Navy and. AF connections.
Too far to commute to D.C. But my family did weekend commutes from the 1920s. Where the jobs were.
Know this about Virginia....in summer the humidity is TERRIBLE.
My new landlord moved here from Colorado for work purposes. Last summer his wife and kid refused to go outside during the summer due to the humidity. They felt like they were suffocating.
And in the dead of summer there aren’t many breezes to move that heavy, moist air around. Could be a little breezier in Winchester/Shenandoah valley though.
The further upriver you go the happier you will be.
We have had it with Washington state. Property taxes are crazy, 10% sales taxes, $300 car license, toll lanes and LIBERALS. I am a 3rd generation Washington native and they have finally driven us out. We love the weather and the natural surroundings, salmon fishing and crabbing, but we can’t stand the political correctness and the constant efforts to get into our wallets. We looked at New Hampshire but I am told it snows there sometimes!
Go a little further west to Hardy County. That’s where my wife is from. Rural and only lightly tainted by the effluent immediately to the east. Plus it’s quite cooler than NOVA.
You just missed the Apple Blossom Festival which is their big annual shindig. Do you like Patsy Cline?
It’s a nice town with good schools and enough to keep you entertained. Close enough to DC to do day trips.
Just west of town is a small lake community, Lake Holiday, which never really took off but, that makes it better in my view. Not too far from the actual town but, not in the sticks.
Our mountains are just hills compared to Washington and we do get 4 seasons. Lots of history and a good mix of activities.
We live on the coast now. Hampton Roads area.
I grew up between Shepherdstown & Harpers Ferry, Born and raised in the area. Played Winchester and surrounding areas in football and baseball. Back in the 60’s and 70’s, this was the place to be. Now it is loaded with meth, heroin and marijuana. Look at the crime stats (via citydata.com... http://www.city-data.com/city/Winchester-Virginia.html) It’s a great place to visit for history, has a decent hospital though quality has deteriorated over the years and the view and Apple Blossom Festival is the best.
