f you protest an oil or gas pipeline in Texas, you could face up to 10 years in prison.
The bill on the verge of becoming law in Texas would classify civil disobedience against the construction of a pipeline in Texas a third-degree felony, putting it on the same level of felony as attempted murderers, according to the Texas Observer, or equivalent to sentences handed down to drive-by shooters who fail to hit their mark, as Bloomberg put it.

I’m guessing “protest” in this case means “try to blow up,” or something similar.
Make it a capital offense.
I have a problem when they call vandals “Protesters”. There’s nothing illegal about marching and carrying signs.
What these people are doing, what they will go to prison for, is not protesting. My GAF meter doesn’t even twitch.
Yeah I’m pretty sure standing there with a sign won’t get you 10 years.
But if it will put Texas in a bad light, they’ll print it that way.
“Im guessing protest in this case means try to blow up, or something similar.”
It probably means something like supergluing your breasts to a pipeline and causing a delay. (Actually, that would be hilarious. I’d pay money to see that.)
I remember an antiwar nun protester who broke into a government facility. If I recall she got jail time.
Several decades ago animal rights protestors broke into a CDC lab studying plagues and let plague infected animals free. They weren’t caught and the animals probably died soon after so we didn’t end up with a plague. But it was pure luck. I’d imagine that would be worth 10 years if they were caught.
Similar bills have already passed in North Dakota,
South Dakota, Louisiana, Iowa and Oklahoma.
Every once in a while, people used to break into SAC bases and pour blood on a B-52, or hit the landing gear of a B-1 with a little hammer.
They got pretty heavy sentences, IIRC. Quite a few years.
Yeah, I'm sure Texas is all broke up about that.
"Get a rope."
Sounds like it’s the new cattle thieving crime.
LOL
Really?
That’s a great point.
You should be able to walk around carrying a sign protesting whaever you please as long as you aren’t interfering with anyone else.
Disrupting business and other people’s lives is not OK. Damaging property is not OK. Criminal activities should be subject to criminal penalties.
Those pipelines are really needed. There is so much oil in the Permian Basin that getting it out is a problem.
Could have been worse, instead of Plague (which you can get here, thank you San Fransisco!) it could have been Rage...
3 hots & a cot....
THAT kind of welfare program I could get to like.
Is Sheriff Joe still looking for a Jail to run???
Yep - civil disobedience is a bit more than “protesting”...it’s breaking the law as part of the “protest”...
