DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) — Parents and schools are reacting to the Trump administration's rollback on school lunches.
School lunch menus will be remade nationwide. President Donald Trump rolled-back an Obama-era mandate that required schools to only serve whole-grains, along with more fresh fruits and vegetables. This change affects millions of children.
Cafeteria operators say the mandate made costs higher. But some parents here in Des Moines feel getting rid of the mandate is wrong, and they're not alone.
"I guess it's upsetting or annoying if we're not doing what's best for our kids," said Courtney Starbuck, a parent at Hubbell Elementary in Des Moines, adding that she relies on the school to provide her 7-year-old, Audrey, with a healthy meal. "The schools are just a place I can trust that my daughter is being well cared for, including her health and well-being and nutrition."
Starbuck is not alone. "I want my kids to be having healthy foods. I don't agree with it," Des Moines parent Jessica Styron said.
Des Moines Public schools serve 36,000 meals every day. In a move that surprised parents, the district announced it will continue to *honor the whole-grain mandate.

Bingo. With 8 kids in our family we always brown bagged it. Now in my 60’s I still bring my lunch.
Schools are grooming children for all sorts of sexual immorality. Schools don’t have her child’s well-being at heart.
Stupid parents. They can convince their local schools to continue any food rules they want them to, without any federal mandate. Blaming Trump for any change in what their own schools do is just ignorance and refusal to be proactive themselves with their public schools. I bet the complaining parents, most of them, don’t even vote in their local K-12 school board elections.

The federal school lunch guidelines were a joke under Obama and were a joke before Obama and will almost certainly be a joke after Obama.
As long as the FDA still keeps pushing 300g a day of carbs as “healthy”, red meat bad, there is no way school lunch guidelines witll ever be more than a joke. As long as they keep pushing low fat as “healthy” it will be a joke... as long as everything is processed and coated in breading it will be a joke.
I will take the lunches I was served in school in the 70s over any of the crap they have served since.

It doesn’t matter if the food is eaten or not. Whether or not it gets served is what matters.
I’m not saying that nobody at the schools care whether the kids eat or not. I know teachers who would take food from home if they had students they knew weren’t eating. As far as the school administration is concerned, the money is the important thing.

What is the point of serving “healthy” meals if the kids don’t eat it? My friend was in charge of the city schools lunches and she said it was unelievable how much food was in the trash....you canot make a kid eat food they don’t like or don’t like the way it looks. Kids were falling asleep in class because they weren’t eating and they certainly can’t learn if they’re asleep. You know Moochie doesn’t drink skim milk or pass up sugar.
