In Australia we do not have anything like Americas first amendment guarantee of freedom of speech.
This week a superstar rugby football player, who is a conservative Christian and whose beliefs are well known to the public and to his employers, placed a very strong statement about who he believes will go to hell on instagram. Now the leaders of the football organizations which employ him say they are planning to terminate his contract unless compelling mitigating factors emerge. For more details on all this and the mitigating factors I think they should consider please see https://freedom-demokrasi-and-civilised-humanity.com/2019/04/12/christian-israel-folaus-faith-and-freedom-of-speech/
Our conservative Prime Minister, Scott Morrison (known as ScoMo) has said the comments are terribly insensitive and his leftist opponent, Bill Shorten, (known as BS), has gone a bit further and suggested that Folaus comments are hateful speech. ScoMo leaves it to the rugby authorities to sort out the mess. BS invokes the possibility of criminal action. For me this is reminiscent of the police state action taken against me from within the political party of BS in 2016 when I lobbied them to support WW2 commemoration. (For more details see https://freedom-demokrasi-and-civilised-humanity.com/2019/01/25/open-letter-to-bill-shorten-you-are-not-fit-to-lead-australia/)
Conservative commentator and Rugby reform activist Alan Jones has said, Weve got an issue here because were going down a very, very narrow road here. This has gone on and on and on this crap. Out there, people now are terrified of saying anything, They dont know what they can say. Its got nothing to do with Israel (Folau), or Rugby, or religion, or homosexuals. Where are we in this country on free speech? Jones went on to compare Folaus likely sacking with the fact that some people are trying to stop Joe Biden running for the presidency because he put his arm around a womans waist.
Should businesses have a right to sack someone who allegedly damages their image with controversial comments or is it more important to protect the individuals right to say things which he believes need to be said for the good of his society?
Eric Liddell another rugby playing Christian would really be in trouble now.
Funny....in 2019 America we do not have anything like 2000 Americas first amendment guarantee of freedom of speech.
Yeah well, it’s not for us Christians to judge and announce who is going to hell. Let’s focus and repent on our own sins. Right, Buttifudge? (Oops, I just did it. Doh!)
Looked at his list, don’t see a problem.
In some ways I’d consider it tame.
Some time ago I posted this which through a series of responses eventually got me quoted on Fundies Say the Darndest Things.
The first post of mine was somewhat applicableto this thread, to people flatly offended ...
“Those who are perishing can repent, in which case they will bring for the fruit of repentance, or they can stick to their guns till the end, in which case we should not expect them to have a high opinion of sound doctrine.
“We are not called to be considered of good repute to the lost, we are called to speak the word both in and out of season.
“Guess what: to those out of season they are likely to resent Gods word.
“And thats THEIR problem.”
Direct attack on a Christian’s belief. And what does the evangelical Morrison do. Sides with the wolves. Coward. He can forget about my vote on May 18. Another conservative frightened by his own shadow. Sick to death of these gutless so called conservatives. Shorten is at least consistent. He won’t be getting my vote either, but at least he isn’t another pseudo conservative who folds when he should step up to the plate and tell the homo mafia to stick it where the sun don’t shine
“Funny....in 2019 America we do not have anything like 2000 Americas first amendment guarantee of freedom of speech.”
We do have freedom of speech, the problem is that we have gutless politicians who refuse to defend that speech. That means the defense of our freedom of speech falls to us, individually and collectively, to defend it.
Maintaining personal strength is important but, when religion is unfairly attacked to the point that people are scared to attend and churches are unsustainable, society loses.
Thats one reason Donald Trump and his fearless tweeting broke through the crap and beat HRC.
Bily The Infidel Kid, I think it is OK for us to talk in general about what sort of things we believe are soul-destroying. That is how societies figure out what sort of societies thay want to be. Passing judgement on individual people should only be done with much more caution and much more gently.
We do that by both speaking up and listening in.
‘Jones went on to compare Folaus likely sacking with the fact that some people are trying to stop Joe Biden running for the presidency because he put his arm around a womans waist.’
They may want to see some more YouTube videos. In some, Biden is practically raping women. (a bit exaggerated, but not very much!)
..... and all it takes to acheive that result is the belief that a vegemite sandwich has said or done something offensive .....
Biden has done more than Alan Jones described, but I think the old ways of doing things where we did not expect our powerful leaders to be asexual and let them have privacy is in some ways better thatn the modern vilification of sexuality especially when it is the sexuality of a powerful man ....... https://freedom-demokrasi-and-civilised-humanity.com/2018/08/31/gender-and-society-calling-out-hysteria/ ..... trusting the fact that most people will seek healthy relationships has a bit to be said for it ........
I trust you fellows down under to do the right thing. You did the right thing for our platoon back then.
God bless you and Semper Fi.
Wherever the queen’s crown casts a shadow, free speech and freedom of religion are evaporating.
Agreed! I’m with you 100%. Thanks, Brother!
