We lived about 15 miles from where that took place.

I clearly remember watching KTLA coverage of the event and for people who had TV’s at the time most everyone did.

Are we quite sure it was CO₂ and not CO (carbon monoxide)? CO₂ of itself is not toxic at all UNLESS it was (this is a guess) so saturated that the O₂ was practically totally displaced.

Which would be a case of, NOT CO₂ toxicity, but of hypoxemia.

It's quite different with carbon monoxide. The respiratory system takes it up heavily in preference to O₂.

I'm just surprised that there wouldn't be adequate air circulation at the bottom of the well. I'm too lazy to look up the relative density of O₂ and CO₂ and their partial molar pressure.
