US State Secretary Mike Pompeo's quest to scare Hungary away from dealing with Russia and China appears to have turned sour, as Budapest said it's fed up with lectures about its foreign policy.
Pompeo is on a five-day massive charm offensive in Eastern Europe seeking to "make up" for the time the US "shunned" the nations of the region "in a way that drove them to fill a vacuum with folks who didn't share our values," as he himself put it.
He did not focus his attention solely on the Kremlin, though, and promptly warned his Hungarian counterpart about the dangers of working with China, by saying that "Beijing's handshake comes with strings
that will leave Hungary indebted both economically and politically."

Unfortunately, these are not enough to make up for the fact that the country still has proclivity to fall back into the same patterns of behavior that screwed itself over in the first place: anti-Semitism, unchecked dictatorial power, morally careless alliances with bad actor countries including Iran and the like...
This is a Russian source reporting this.
This is RT!!!! IGNORE!
I think Orban is doing a great job. And I like Pompeo also. The issue is that the powers that control the EU are (a) dead-set against Hungarian sovereignty (or the national sovereignty of any EU member); (b) pushing Islamic immigration; and (c) pushing an anti-Christian social agenda. Is it any wonder that the Hungarian government would seek relationships that counterbalance EU bullying and with countries who do not give a whit about the EU’s immigration policies and social agenda? If the USA wants to Hungary to back off its relationships with Russia and China, it should, rather than lecture Hungary, pressure the EU to leave Hungary alone.
The USA neocons' handshake, on the other hand, is one of pure and devoted friendship. :)
Agreed...But as I stated above, Hungary is not immune from raising red flags of its own...
For all the beef Trump gets, he is NOT an authoritarian. Orban however is willing to rewrite election laws, block free press, etc...It’s a Catch 22.
Just ask Libya, Syria and Ukraine. Every place McCain visited to help them shake down ‘bad’ influence is so much better now! /s
Didn’t seem that way by reading the transcript of the Hungarian Foriegn Minister and Pompeo...Hmmm....maybe RT has an agenda?
Sorry, what’s your source of moral authority again that you feel you have standing to castigate one nation after another that doesn’t live up to your standards?
Russia, Hungary... who else do you hate? Anyone east of Berlin and north of Turkey in general?
Good post!
You throw out an awful lot of crap there, and you realize that there have been times, very recent times that America could be accused of the same things?
Careful your hate is showing.
Neocons and Soros trolls believe they know better.
I am reslly uncomfortable with oomoei criticising the anti Doris moved in Hungary and framing it in terms of ‘human rights’. The other stuff from both sides I see as just each expressing national interest. I dunno what you mean about recent antisemitism or Iran connections in Hungary, haven’t heard about that.
Wow so many typos, sent from cell phone. Was talking about pompeo criticising anti Soros stuff
Orban is very pro-Israel, thank God.
There still remains a reluctance among some in the country to acknowledge Hungary’s semi-complicitness with the Nazis during occupation...
The Hungarian government was overthrown via a Nazi-engineered coup in 1944.
They had just defected to the Allies, when the Nazis had installed the Arrow Cross goons, who were a small minority amongst the Hungarian population.
Orban is using the name Soros as a club to bash those he doesn’t like. Even his own former Minister of Economy - Attila Chikán - got added to some list of “Mercenaries of Soros” after he criticized Orban of turning Hungary’s economy into socialism.
Hungary has now the third highest taxes on employees in the EU.

Thank you Krosan. I believe America's founders would put up some red flags on Hungary's behalf as well. They would cheer on Hungary's pursuit of freedom from Soros and the E.U. -- but not Orban's increasingly heavy hand on civil and economic liberties within the country. Our founders understood just how fallen human beings are, how fragile liberty is, and how power corrupts even the most righteous of men.
I call it the Zsa Zsa effect....
> I believe America’s founders would
Interesting call-out, given that your approach of meddling in foreign countries was specifically condemned and eschewed by the Founders as mischief-making.
Every American conservative is quite aware of Washington’s warning about “entangling alliances”... but you are neither American nor conservative, are you?
