Ellis Island, where the Statue of Liberty stands, was the wall of the time.
Nobody got into America without passing through it, and lots of people were screened and sent back home or kept in quarantine.

My Grandfather had his twin brother taken on Ellis Island. He had a disease that was not allowed into the country.
The family had to choose between waiting for him to clear, or moving on. They had to choose to move, for the good of the rest of the family.
Now THAT is a cruel choice, but necessary if you are protecting the citizens that are here.
What was that about the Statue of Liberty again????
