Lee Oui-ryuk was on the verge of dying of starvation when he stole a block of tofu in a market in North Korea at the height of a nationwide famine. Too weak to run away after he swiped the food, Lee continued eating as the seller cried and beat him with a metal rod, staining the white tofu red with his blood.
At nine years old he knew the theft would end in violence, but in his head he repeated over and over: Even if you are beaten, keep eating. He eventually passed out and when he awoke, took a morsel that remained on his hand to his sister.
Even today I dont have the words to describe the hunger, Lee said. My head was too big for my body because I was so malnourished and my neck couldnt support the weight, which meant my head was always at a slant.
More than two decades later Lee is no longer starving. The 31-year-old lives in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, where he can have virtually any dish delivered to his home with a few taps on his smartphone. But his experiences in the North forever changed his relationship with food and he often craves dishes invented by a chronically hungry nation.
In North Korea every single thing I ate was related to my life, and even the smallest things would seem really big, he said. But here I just eat food because its a part of living.
Many of the roughly 30,000 North Korean refugees living in the South are awestruck when they first arrive at seeing supermarkets stocked with items unseen back home. But they also find it difficult to cope with the plethora of choice and still carrying the trauma of growing up hungry.

But surely OUR Socialists will be nice to we Deplorables in the years after they take over. Right? THIS time, they'll get it right, for sure!!
You would think with all the horrific history of communism that people would viciously protest and attack anyone who even remotely supported it. But no, instead, incredibly, we have morons that elect BLATANT communists into office, over and over.
Thanks 2ndDivisionVet .
That woman is the dangerous combination of confidence, and stupidity and doesn’t know she’s stupid.
Unfortunately lots of people fall for this crap. I bet she’s in Congress until she dies.
I read Belyenkos book. To see for himself it wasn’t being shown a Potemkin Village he asked his handlers to take him to a ‘’lower class’’ place to eat. They took him to a kind of shabby place in a low rent hood and even there he found an abundance of good food.
Socialists hate abundance because you have to get off your ass and work for it. They think fancy slogans and dialectics will make it happen by magic. Or killing lots of people who don’t believe in socialist magic.
Living proof that we can have anything here including health care and a secure border. If the Works have no food and we have an abundance what does that tell you about the systems we live under? Some don’t want to hear it.
They (Liberals) refuse to believe that socialism cannot work and believe that right people arent in charge.
However, once the actual leadership is established and comes to power, that leadership has to identify those they can trust from those they cannot.
Those that cannot be trusted are those same ‘right people’ who now, in the eyes of the leadership, have betrayed their country to achieve the socialist cause. What is to stop those people from betraying the socialist revolution as well? So ‘right people’ are put to death and, in the end, there are no ‘right people’ remaining because they are all dead.
Today’s ill-educated leftists cannot imagine such a fate befalling them, primarily because they are ill-educated, never having read and studied history. So they blithely push for the destruction of a system of government they do not understand for another system of government they do not understand, but makes them feel proud, superior, smart, intellectual, with it, among the glitterati, powerful, in touch, awake. But in succeeding, ultimately dead ...
and when they were taken to an American super market (I’ll paraphrase here, but this is quite close) they began to cry and said in Russian that their lives had been wasted.
Back in the late 1970s a friend of mine had her grandmother in from Yugoslavia. I was with them when we visited our local mega-Mart. First she started filling her cart with everything she could see. I asked why and was told the old lady was convinced it would all be gone soon.
Her granddaughter explained it was like this every day and she started crying and repeating the same phrase over and over. I asked what she was saying.
Lies...its all lies.

I myself have no clue what real deprivation is and only get a hint from storys like this.
Easily the most horrible book I’ve ever read including those detailing Stalingrad and the aftermath. Your never forget it. Should be req’d reading.
I knew a Russian women who was convinced of the same thing - except it was even funnier. The store she thought was a government run grocery store for ‘elites’ was an old Winn Dixie in a marginal neighborhood...
You’re in my prayers... sorry that was done to you.
How horribly sad. Evil is not confined by borders but by character of souls. I hope you are okay now and have people in your life that love you, and more importantly, that you love. I know the pain will never go away, but turn it into a weapon to help those you love the most.
I was walking through my local grocery when the store manager was talking to the meat dept. manager. Apparently some Russian dignitaries were visiting the next day, and the store manager wanted the meat cases packed full with nothing left in the back. He wanted them to see what abundance looked like.
