As the world wonders how totalitarian China will use her economic power in the future, it is worth remembering why democratic Indonesia should be among our friends.
The last time this sort of one person rule happened in a major power the result was World War Two (WW2). In response to World War Two, the world set up the United Nations in New York, and crafted the United Nations Declaration Of Human Rights in an attempt to learn from that tragedy and craft a better world.
One of the growing uncertainties in modern South Pacific strategic politics is the future alignment of Indonesia. In population terms Indonesia is the fourth biggest country in the world and is forecast to be the worlds fourth or fifth biggest economy by 2050.
Australia and America have recently announced support for developing a naval base at Manus Island in Papua New Guinea. Aussie PM, Scott Morrison and VP Mike Pence discussed this in Papua New Guinea in November.
Evan Laksmana, of Jakarta's Centre for Strategic and International Studies, has said in response that Australian strategic planning "should not assume passive neutrality on the part of Indonesia in thinking about a future regional conflict".
My father faced Japanese bullets on what is now an Indonesian beach at the end of WW2.
Dad's image has become part of a grass roots art display at a waterhole in Morotai, Indonesia, where my father camped prior to going into battle and where General Douglas MacArthur built a bathroom for his wife. https://tujuhbelasan.com/2018/10/17/austral-indonesian-tujuhbelasan-1-my-dad-in-morotai/
Despite all the ways in which the world has changed we should never forget what The Greatest Generation won in WW2.
Indonesians revere 1945 as the year their free nation was born in the aftermath of that war.
Democratic Indonesia is a friend we need.
Instead, How about a strong quake to wash away this Islamic cesspool?
Indonesia is a Muslim country nothing democratic about it
Never been to Indonesia so not informed enough to comment, but it would take some convincing arguments to get me to believe we need Indonesia, which has a significant Muslim population.
A lot of Muslims in Indonesia are converting to Christianity. There’s quite a movement. The academic paper at the link that follows, published in 2015, estimated that 6 million Muslims had converted to Christianity.

A bankrupt China is not a threat to anyone. They will be too busy trying to pacify their rioting citizens.
The govt hasnt
Bankrupt China calls in all the loans they made to us and we are in trouble.
Cut off commerce with China and they wouldnt last a year. We shouldnt be doing business with them, Indonesia, India, and others that are not allies or respectful of us.
Hold the money, else give it ROC?
Really? How does China plan to enforce collection?
Nobody else will loan to us.
Government and private business can't pay the interest on what they've already borrowed and default.
Big mess. You lose your job.
No one NEEDS Indonesia.
We can print money. One of the advantages of being America.
Hyperinflation. Your money is worthless.
> Bankrupt China calls in all the loans they made to us and we are in trouble. <
True, unless the US president at the time does an FDR, and declares a “bank holiday” on foreign loans. You’ll get your money, China. Paid in full, over time. Just not right now. It’ll take awhile. We’ll send you an email when we’re ready.
LOL! They’ve been saying this for years. Time to call their bluff...
Indonesia is the home of Islamic “Heresy App” for smartphones.
I’d rather hand the entire country over to the PRC for “reeducation” than help them in any way.
The Indonesian Mohammedans are as radical as those from most anywhere in Arabia and more radical than the majority.
Plus the Hindu Indians (which are a large majority) understand too well the pitfalls of playing nice with the Mohammedans, and most of the Indians who are good Capitalists also are pro-America and pro-Trump.
