The China hawk who captured Trump's 'very, very large brain' (Good article)

Washington veteran Michael Pillsbury has quietly become a key figure behind Trump's confrontational China policy, to the dismay of Beijing — and some fellow China experts.

--

A day before President Donald Trump departed for the G-20 summit in Buenos Aires, several top officials gathered in the Oval Office to strategize about Trump's highly anticipated meeting there with China's president.

Seated around Trump's Resolute Desk were Vice President Mike Pence, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. On couches a few feet away were White House chief of staff John Kelly, Trump's son in law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, Pence's chief of staff, Nick Ayers, and Matt Pottinger, the National Security Council's top Asia hand. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro joined by speakerphone.

Before the discussion ended, Pence stepped out to fetch an outsider for a final briefing about Trump's Saturday dinner with Chinese president Xi Xinping, which could determine whether the U.S. and China plunge deeper into a potentially disastrous trade war.

That outsider was Michael Pillsbury, a starchy academic at Washington's conservative Hudson Institute enjoying a remarkable, and unlikely, influence. He has caught the ear of Trump, who during a November press conference proclaimed him "probably the leading authority on China."

This is a good article.

I just happened upon it, read it, and am thoroughly impressed.

That said, it is from Politico, which is sort of "blocked" here at FR. With the provision it be posted under "Bloggers" and "Democrat Propaganda".

So here it is... :D

Michael Pillsbury.

He apparently has quite a supporter in President Trump.

He speaks Mandarin, and travels to China quite often. And he thinks America is very, very naïve in dealing with China.

I have nowhere near his experience, but I agree with the gentleman completely.

This is a good article. If you would like, read it.

My compliments to Trump, Mr. Pillsbury, and to this administration.

It seems, finally some adults are in charge.

Good article.

Make no mistake about it, the creeping dragon means to take over the entire word, based on the ancient premise that they carry civilization and all the rest of the world are subservient, uncivilized troglodytes. Yes, it is race based. And they are now destroying Tibet and the Uighur region of China, but we hear little or nothing.

They would so subjugate the whole world.

Pillsbury is a good man.He also knows all of this.

Very good article. Glad you posted it.

Of course, Politico can't help being sour about anything related to the truth. Take this snippet for example...

An unrepentant self-promoter, Pillsbury has twice brought boxes of the book to Capitol Hill to distribute to members and their aides.
Passing out copies of one's book FOR FREE isn't exactly self-promotion, is it? It's called selling your point of view.

They would so subjugate the whole world.

And it's not just because they are Chinese and believe they are the superior culture. It's also because the Chinese leadership is committed to Marxism/communism.

They recognize that communism doesn't encourage or even permit invention and creativity. They know they have to steal to keep up with the rest of the world in terms of technological advancement.

And that doesn't bother them one iota.

They also recognize that the ideology of communism isn't safe unless it destroys all competing ideologies...hence their absolute need to take over the world.

It does make one wonder where these devoted communists think invention will come from when there is no one left to steal from.

<>"An unrepentant self-promoter"<>

Who else could be defined in that manner?

I do not find it a flaw necessarily.

True to their Marxist roots, once the world is conquered the controlling authority of the state will dwindle to be replaced by,,,wait for it...the authority of the people, IOW, rule by the polity, or, the purest form of capitalism. THAT, my Marxist friends, is the end game of the Communist state, to become the culture envisioned by the Founders of the US Constitution.

(Some respected China experts have called his writings “shoddy” and infected by paranoid notions of Chinese malevolence.)

The ubiquitous “Some”, which means “Politico-approved”. Of course, they are “respected”...BY POLITICO”! Disgusting anti-Trump bias shows its ugly face again.

PING. Quite a good read about an increasingly influential China hawk counseling our President. I read the story top to bottom.

The “some” are probably Chamber of Corruption cronies who are fully prepared to sell out the future of their country for quick profits today.

He speaks Mandarin, and travels to China quite often.

He should rethink his travel schedule if this trade war continues to heat up.

Look up John Leighton Stuart, American missionary, diplomat and China expat. He supported the Nationalist but argued for engagement w/ the Chicoms before Washington caught a clue about where things were going there.

It is possible that had the US followed his advice prior to Korea things could have been different. Meanwhile, Truman Admin was playing Chicken Little w/ China and lamely bailed after the failed Marshall mission in ‘46-47.

Mao understood that Stuart was dangerous, attacked him for “cultural aggression” and removed all references to him and his legacy in China.

Truman Admin caught on too late and Korean War followed.
