Showing that there is snow on my roof, I seem to recall a letter to Ann Landers relating how that person tried to mail something to a New Mexico address and had it returned for insufficient postage to a foreign country.

I’ll bet when they came back with a map of the US showing New Mexico as a state they’d claim they Photoshopped it in.

Breaking Bad was filmed in New Mexico. Pick a song from the show. Or you could go with that song that starts “Down in the Southwest town of El Paso I fell in love with a Mexican girl ..”

I believe the Postal Service did this, as when I tried to get a security clearance to work at the post, they said Hawaii was not a US State until after 1970.

“Everyone knows sweet home Alabama and West Virginia, because they have songs.”

I know about them because we were required to learn all 48 states and their capitals to progress from the 4th grade to the 5th.

A lot of East Coasters think there is nothing west of the Appalachians but California and maybe Chicago.

Quick, off the top of your head no cheating with Google, what are the capitals of North and South Dakota?

Many years ago when I did a lot of traveling for a large corporation. I would mention that I was from New Mexico, the most common response was “You speak really good English. How long have you been in this country?”

My wife and I met and married in Alamogordo, NM when we were both stationed at Holloman Air Force Base.

We later lived in Albuquerque when we were stationed at Kirkland AFB.

Many of our favorite memories are of camping, hiking and skiing in New Mexico. Beautiful place.

Interesting - the New Mexico thing is just stupid.
But Maine? That is just REALLY funny!

My uncle tells the story of when he used to drive for North American moving. One day he wakes up from a nap at the truck stop. There is some young man waiting to see if he needed a helper to unload the furniture.

“Yeah - North American - I been there once!”

Neal Boortz used to play an audio tape of someone from New Mexico trying to get tickets to see some Olympic events and being repeatedly asked for passport information.

it’s funnier than that. So the deal was they were going to let local citizens buy from a special block, but only if the tickets were for people born in the US. I was born in Hobbs, but when I said New Mexico they informed me that foreign born individuals were not allowed to use these tickets. No amount of esplaining was able to overcome it, New Mexico was not in the list on their screen...

Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
Nighttime would find me in Rosa’s cantina
Music would play and Felina would whirl

Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina
Wicked and evil while casting a spell
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden
I was in love but in vain, I could tell

One night a wild young cowboy came in
Wild as the West Texas wind
Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing
With wicked Felina, the girl that I loved

So in anger I
Challenged his right for the love of this maiden
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore
My challenge was answered in less than a heartbeat
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor

Just for a moment I stood there in silence
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done
Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there
I had but one chance and that was to run

Out through the back door of Rosa’s I ran
Out where the horses were tied
I caught a good one, it looked like it could run
Up on its back and away I did ride

Just as fast as I
Could from the West Texas town of El Paso
Out to the badlands of New Mexico

Back in El Paso my life would be worthless
Everything’s gone in life; nothing is left
It’s been so long since I’ve seen the young maiden
My love is stronger than my fear of death

I saddled up and away I did go
Riding alone in the dark
Maybe tomorrow, a bullet may find me
Tonight nothing’s worse than this pain in my heart

And at last here I
Am on the hill overlooking El Paso
I can see Rosa’s cantina below
My love is strong and it pushes me onward
Down off the hill to Felina I go

Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys
Off to my left ride a dozen or more
Shouting and shooting, I can’t let them catch me
I have to make it to Rosa’s back door

Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel
A deep burning pain in my side
Though I am trying to stay in the saddle
I’m getting weary, unable to ride

But my love for
Felina is strong and I rise where I’ve fallen
Though I am weary I can’t stop to rest
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest

From out of nowhere Felina has found me
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side
Cradled by two loving arms that I’ll die for
One little kiss and Felina, goodbye

Bismarck came to mind immediately. Somehow, in the intervening 59 years, Pierre dropped out of ready-service memory. But then, my memory is deteriorating at a rapid rate.

Didn’t have to look them up...
Bismark, ND
Pierre, SD
Being born in Minnesota helps with
this one.
PS...I live in New Mexico.

The funny thing is whenever I had to deal with the D.C. government, I thought I was in a foreign country. So not surprising that they project so much ignorance, because they are, ignorant.

I will add my validation to this thread. In the ‘70s and ‘80s I worked for a “big” company in Santa Fe.

More than once, folks from back East asked about needing a passport to visit our factory.
