The Other Great Depression: Inside America’s Exploding Suicide Epidemic
DC Dirty Laundry ^ | 11/18/2018 | Michael Snyder

What in the world has happened to us? Despite our ridiculously high standard of living compared to the rest of the world, America is a deeply unhappy place. When I was growing up, there were no “smart phones”, the Internet did not exist, if you wanted to buy something you had to actually go to a store and hunt for it, and most vehicles were pieces of junk that completely broke down after a few years. Today, we have hundreds of television channels, we have more movies than we could ever possibly watch, video games have become wildly creative and there is an app for almost anything that you could possibly need on your phone just a few clicks away. We are literally drowning in entertainment, and yet we are far less happy than previous generations. In fact, the CDC says that the suicide rate in the United States has risen by 34 percent since the year 2000…

Men who work in construction and extraction had the highest rates of suicide in the United States, according to a report published Thursday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For women, suicide rates were highest among those who work in arts, design, entertainment, sports and media.

From 2000 to 2016, the suicide rate among the US working-age population — people 16 to 64 — increased 34%, the report says.

Benzodiazapene withdrawal (taken as prescribed) is causing more suicides than is generally known.

Instead, what people really need is to find meaning and purpose in life, and that is not something that big government is going to provide.

Leftardism destroys minds with their war against reality and reason. When one's mind is destroyed, one seeks to escape from awareness, to obliterate one's consciousness, and to eliminate oneself from existence.

Lack of real meaningful human interaction. Speaking from my situation, my kids are grown up, married with kids of their own. Wife left and is on her third marriage. Don’t really have many friends outside work and the gym. I can see why people commit suicide.

It crosses my mind every day

My 13yr old nephew is glued to his iPhone 24/7 when he his not looking at his phone he is hhooting and hollering into his PlayStation microphone..
When he’s not doing either he talks and replies in one word sentences with his head down.
His entire social life is based on social media as are his few physical friends.
When i was his age (1980) i was on my bike all day, hanging with my neighborhood buddies, playing neighborhood sports with my buds, building forts, never home till the streetlights came on, mowing lawns, building go-carts, messing with small engines, building model rockets, shooting my BB gun etc etc.
Kids these days hardly even see the sun.
it’s sad...

Plus all the negative news ! Everything’s negative. Politics is so dirty and the campaign never ends. We’re slready talking about 2020. Can’t we have a break and get something accomplished in this country before we start talking about the next election.

I don’t think I have any actual friends at all and haven’t in decades.

There are those people who just want something from me.

I pretty much keep to myself.

Besides, after a long week of labor, the commute, appeasing the spouse’s sports obsession, I have a hard time dealing with life. Any quiet and downtime is cherished.

women, suicide rates were highest among those who work in arts, design, entertainment, sports and media.

because their art sucks, nobody wants their designs, entertainment is based on their looks/cleavage which is fleeting, sports talent which is even more so and entertainment where God knows what that means unless it's the escort business and media get aged out also and they're left as barren cat farmers led astray by the empty promises of radical feminism maybe???

naaa... toxic masculinity i'm sure

If I were to just blame LIBERALISM, I wouldn’t be far wrong, to wit:

1. I’m depressed over what Liberals have done to the Boy Scouts.
2. I’m depressed over what Liberals have done to the entertainment industry.
3. I’m depressed over Liberals controlling ALL the alphabet media.
4. I’m depressed over Liberals turning Colorado into a Liberal State with it’s number one priority being homosexual issues.
5. I’m depressed that not one show on the hundreds of channels on the TV I used to watch has a currently produced Andy Griffith/Barney Fife/Opie type show on it.
6. I’m depressed that my daughter’s and grand-daughters have to worry about some pervert walking into the bathroom with them.
7. I’m depressed over women being raped with impunity by Muslims in advanced radical liberal countries. Are WE far behind?

I could go on and on and on and on ENDLESSLY. But, you get the point. If Suicide is UP then Liberalism is to blame! Period.

Good observations. With the advent of cell phones and other electronic gadgets, people are more isolated and lonely than ever.

“They plop down in front of the TV and instead of lighthearted comedy that relieves stress they get ugly nasty programming...”

And, commercials that portray Dad as a silly white doofus, continuously outsmarted by wise and brilliant Mom & children.

A media that endlessly bleats how bad things are and now has taken to bleating how bad Americans are is also to blame.

You know, I wonder how much of this is linked to the rise of the 24 hour news cycle. In the 70s, when I was a kid, there was a half hour of news in the early morning, an hour at lunch, an hour at dinner, and a late night update before the stations all went off the air. Now? Constant. Night and day, every minute.

***People stopped interacting communally even when I was a kid.***

I remember those days, with friends coming over for cards, games and visits. A trip to town was a movie, cafe, friends.
Then came TV, and everyone stayed home to patrol the streets of Dodge City with Matt Dillon. Movie theaters began to wain, cafes closed down, as no one got out anymore to visit or go shopping in the evenings.

Purpose IMO is not the issue.

It is fundamental survival without condemnation as a total f-up, should you hit a rough financial patch. That’s why those with tenure of various forms are low on the scale, whereas those facing employment challenges—just look at the fields of the women affected—are most likely to go.

Oddly enough, the timeline coincides with the rise of blogs.

Hmmm.

We stream and can get all of that. Maybe you should consider a smart tv.

I'm watching St Elsewhere on Hulu right now for the second time. Love that show.

I couldn't tell you what was on real tv if my life depended on it.
