Big Oil has poured a lot of money to defeat energy-restricting ballot initiatives in various states in the midterm elections, and it succeeded in two key votes.
Voters in Colorado were asked to vote on a ballot proposition to increase the setback distance for drilling oil and gas wells by five times to 2,500 feet, which would have put a lot of land off limits for new developments. Voters in Washington State voted on a proposal to instate a U.S. first state-wide carbon tax.
Both initiatives failed, and both no camps were supported by Big Oil.
In Colorado, Proposition 112 requiring much greater setback distance failed with 56.75 percent of votes against, a relief for Colorado drillers such as Anadarko, Noble Energy, and Devon Energy who had sponsored the no camp in the campaign.

Big Oil has poured a lot of money to defeat energy-restricting ballot initiatives...by Big Assholes.
To me, the phrase “Big Oil” implies that there are examples of “Little Oil” we should be supporting.
The one good thing about the Colorado vote.
In the meantime some of us Washingtonians are going to have to purchase huge gun safes to protect our collections of historic firearms or risk criminal prosecution at least until I-1639 is found to be unconstitutional. Well who doesn't need their rec room looking like a bank vault?
Fibers, plastics, medicines (aspirin?!), cleaning solutions, candlewax, insulation, packing materials, dishes, adhesives, packaging...need I continue?
First of all it is “little oil” e.g. hydrofracking that was the target of this measure, not “big oil” which is largely off-shore and/or using traditional wells.
Lost in FL for off shore drilling. Of course they also had Vaping in public places in the same amendment.
Hopefully it gets thrown out in the courts since it had 2 irrelevant issues on 1 amendment.
Might be a good idea to apply the term to same more in writing.
Man, I hate Big Oil.
It’s not like they provide me energy with amazing efficiency, or that I have four kids and seven cars, or that they really helped me dodge a financial bullet here with no accountability or limits in sight.
I hate Big Oil.
This is the second initiative loss for carbon credits in Washington state. Maybe that’ll make them STFU for a while, even with Democrats in charge of the state legislature.
Unfortunately, two in a row wins against gun rights will keep them busy and hungry for more.
